Export to Excel

Is there a way to export Vantage default reports to an excel file?
Specifically I am trying to export the stocked status report.

When you preview your report, look in your x:\vantage working directory for a report.txt. You can open the text file in excel.

Print preview the report. Go to the vntgwork (or what ever you named it)
directory and open the .txt file for the previewed report. The Excel import
wizard should guide you from there.

We set up a Generic / Text only printer in Windows and print Vantage
reports. Excel will lead you through placing dividers on the data as you
import to Excel. Titles and page headings will generally be "garbaged up"
but you data should be aligned correctly.

I'm not sure off hand how complicated the Stock Status report is or amenable to grabbing the report.txt from the Vantage Work folder but one alternative for turning many stnadard reports into spredsheets or exporting to another database is Monarch from Datawatch. Not real cheap, but very powerful ripping and parsing from reports. Once you setup a template for a report it is a couple click process to extract data from the report file. Setting up the templates involves a bit of learning curve so the investment in software and time depends a lot on how often you want to export default reports to Excel. If an exported report involves a lot of massaging of the spreadsheet to remove heading lines, etc..., every time you run it, it might pay in the long run to automate all of this. Just a thought.

Just thought of something that would be a slick add-on...

In Vantage.INI you can specify the program used for print
previews. Someone could write a little program to pop up and prompt the
user for alternate options, like Print Preview, Save As, Open in Excel,
Email, etc. That would avoid having to poke around in VntgWork.

Wayne,

I'll second that notion.

Sounds like a good candidate for one of the consulting companies /
programmers to crank out for a nominal fee.

I'm not current on any windoze programming, or I'd bang it out. Maybe Thad
or Mike P would like to?

Dave,
Creating a Crystal version of the Stock Status is quite possible for a
'current' date. We have a Crystal version that we use regularly, which is
exportable to Excel. If you are running the Stock Status for a past period
in time in Crystal you would have a mess.

We went live recently on Vantage 6.1. Under our previous version (4.00.904)
when I would preview a report I could look in the target working directory
for report.txt and open the file in excel. In 6.1 when I print preview a
report, there is no report.txt file generated. Is there something I am
missing or a different way to export to Excel?
I still do that in 6.1 so maybe you just need to keep looking for the file.

The stock status report created a report.txt file when I tried that, the AR
aging report did not. The AR aging report default was the crystal report,
when I changed the default to progress, the report.txt file was created and
I was able to export. Must just be an issue with crystal reports??

The issue is this.
When Vantage creates a Progress report, it uses the txt file as a temp file
to work from. When Vantage creates a Crystal report, it creates DBF files
to work from.
Either can be used to get the information you are looking for with a little
effort, but as stated, it depends on the format of the report.
