I don't do Exchange; but just to give you an idea where to look, if no one
else is around to chime in... I'd guess somewhere there's an option to
specify IP addresses that are allowed to relay without any other
authentication. If so, add the addresses range for your internal network,
and things should work again.

Any other unfortunate soles working today?

So my question to anyone that might be in today, or anyone that might
get in Monday that has an answer...

We are having trouble allowing our Vantage server to send email via 6.00
email configuration.

Our server was listed as an open relay due to a series of events
surrounding a recent application of a MS patch. Once fixed, our
exchange server will not even allow unauthenticated computers from
within our network to send SMTP mail. This would include Vantage as
there is no option within Vantage to authenticate to the SMTP server.

I have entered an enhancement request to Epicor for this option, but I
am wondering if anyone else out there has the information on how to make
this work with Exchange 2000, yet not end up with an open relay either.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

I don't actually have an answer to your question, but my organization is
moving toward Exchange 2003 so if you do indeed find a solution to this
issue please post it to the group.

Did you happen to be patching for the NDR Reverse Spam attack? For
those not familiar, spammers are now using the non-delivery reports to
spam the world. Basically, they make the From address the person they
wish to spam and the To address as a fake address on your mail server.
The body of the message is the spam content.

Would you happen to have another SMTP server on your network that you
could use? A Linux box with something like Postfix would be most handy,
but you could also do it with a Windows box and Cygwin (www.cygwin.com)
or another Exchange box if you just want to throw away your money ;).
In short, what you want to do is set up an internal-only SMTP server
that can be rather wide open because it does not face the Internet.

Thanks Adam,

I am not sure just what they were patching (this was my issue at my last
company, but now there is an IT group to do this). The result totally
disabled the sending or receiving of mail from any computer, so they had
to "open it up" to allow mail to flow. As soon as they worked with
Microsoft for the fix, they had to get off the Open Relay lists.

Now that all that is done, we can't even relay from inside without
authentication.

At my last company, I had a Linux server (Kyzo, Net-Inter-Net) that sat
live on the internet. My Exchange server was not visible to the world.
The Linux server would determine if it was forwarding SMTP for an
internal or external IP (I assume based on what NIC it came from or the
IP address that the request was made to (internal or external)). That
machine would forward an internal request without authentication, but
would not forward external requests.

I loved that setup, but I don't have the control over it here.

Do you know if there is a way to enable forwarding unauthenticated
through Exchange (not sure if it is 2000 or 2003 now that I think of it)
from internal IP addresses but not external as there was with my "NIN"?

Thanks again,

Aaron

PS Glad to see Rich and I are not it today...well sorta....wish we all
had it off. :-)

I think what you need to do (for 5.5 anyway - not sure if it is same for
2000 / 2003) is go to Exchange Administrator, choose Connections,
double-click on the Internet Mail Service, and go to the routing tab. I
believe there is a Advanced button there or something (working from
memory here) and you will have some checkboxes. You probably have them
all check off or only the first one checked (all clients that
authenticate or something like that). There is another checkbox that
allows you to specify the IP addresses that are allowed to route. Here
you can specify your entire local subnet as being allowed to route
without SMTP authentication.
