Error msg in DB log

Mike Podlin's Time Out utility has a feature you can set so a use CANNOT open two Vantage sessions by accident or otherwise. Also, I noticed that in the Vantage5.1 New features list there is the ability to restrict the number of Vantage sessions opened on a per-user basis.

David,

My first run in with this error was in Jan of last year when we first went
to V4.

We get zapped with this about once every two weeks.

What happens is that a user will:
* double click to start Vantage
* watch the logo screen popup ...
* wait and watch the logo screen go bye bye
* double click again ( even though the first attempt is still loading )

Go find a P75 with 64 meg of RAM and give it a try. I can almost recreate
it at will.

Note that in the error msg you will see the user number. If you goto your
Vantage server and look at active users you will see that the user has -2-
open sessions. Whenever this happens I just kill both sessions and then
call the user and try again to explain the haste makes waste concept.

Mike Podlin has a utility program that you can run full time on you machine
that will scan the log file and notify you when this is happening.

I've had cases where this has happened at the end of the day and by the next
morning my log file will be 300 meg ...

Also, to reset your log file on a real time basis:
* goto your server
* open the log file with notepad
* click edit on menu bar and select all records .... then click delete
* tap enter key a few times to create a few blank lines
* click file / save ... you will get a msg asking if you want to overlay
existing file - click yes

I just purged my file from 10 meg to 1 k ... Seems like I do this about once
every 2 weeks.

Kill off your old / slow machines and impatient users and this problem can
be greatly minimized.

Last I knew EPICOR / Progress did not have a solution for this although you
might try a utility to prevent more than one version of Vantage from being
started.

Also - we do not use terminal server or Citrix.

One other thing - my remote sites that are linking via a partial T-1 caused
lots of these errors until I explained what was going on. For some of these
people it can take 5-8 minutes to start Vantage. ( Performance is fine once
started )

Good luck on this one.

We have been having this problem ever since we started using terminal
server. Basically the server "looses" the path set up in the environment
settings, but even setting up a batch file with all the paths etc to run the
Vantage start-up has not fixed the problem. From all reports, it seems to
happen on Citrix systems as well. We have yet to find an answer.

Hi All,

The following error messages started appearing in my Vantage.LG
yesterday. At times, as many as 10 or 20 per second were recorded. Today
I'm not seeing any. Any idea what's going on?!

16:29:21 SRV 2: errno=22 reading promsgs file, it may have been deleted.
16:29:21 SRV 2: Previous message sent on behalf of user 33. (5512)
16:29:21 SRV 2: Unable to format message number 565

All of them were "on behalf of user 33."

-Thanks,
Wayne Cox
Wayne,

We have been seeing those errors come and go for a VERY long time. We've
not been able to solve it and have all but given up. The only thing that we
did figure out is that it is related to the Terminal Server clients and when
we moved to Citrix/MetaFrame the error came right along.

Sue

We solved virtually all of the error message problems we started receiving
when we went to Terminal Services by applying the patch that was posted
below.

We had the same problem on Vantage 5.0. I assume the same philosophy
below applies to Vantage 4.0 but you might want to check with support:

Page: 1236MPS
Summary: PG, Terminal server cannot find promsgs.dll
AnswerBook: Vantage ChangeRequests

Problem:

Citrix meta frame & Terminal server give error message "cannot find
promsgs.dll" this message may display on the screen or may only be
showing on the .lg file.

Resolution:

For Terminal Server / Citrix clients, install all of the Progress Client
Products (ClientNetworking, Query/Results, Report Builder) to the
Terminal Server.
After installing Progress to the Terminal Server, you will need to
create a unique .Vtg and a unique Vantage.ini for the clients to use.
Take a copy of the Vantage.Vtg and give it a new name (i.e. TSVntg.VTG)
Edit this new VTG and change the Executable= to point to the local
install of Progress and change the IniFile= to point to a new TSVntg.INI
file. Sample below.

[Vantage Startup]
Executable=C:\Epic50\Progress\bin\prowin32.exe <-----
Database=V:\Vantage\db\vantage
IniFile=V:\Vantage\TSVntg.ini <-----
ParameterFile=V:Vantage\db\Vantage.pf
ConnectOptions=-N TCP -H jay2000 -S vntgdump -ld vantage
TempDirectory=C:\Vntgwork
StartupProcedure=mainmenu.w
OtherParameters=-rand 2 -q -basekey ini

After the new TSVntg.VTG is complete, make a copy of the Vantage.ini
file and give it the same name we used in the TSVntg.vtg which is
TSVntg.INI.

Edit the new TSVntg.INI file and change the DLC= and the PROBUILD= in
the [Startup] section to reflect the local Terminal Server installation
path, indicated by the arrows below.

Example:
--------------

[Startup]
V6Display=no
;ImmediateDisplay=yes
;MultitaskingInterval=100
DLC=C:\Epic50\Progress <------
Use-3D-Size=No
PROBUILD=C:\Epic50\Progress\Probuild <------
PROPATH=.,V:\Vantage
UseSourceEditor=yes
;EditorConfigPath=d:\Prowork\proedit
PrinterFont=Courier New,Size=12
AllowDesignMode=no

Finally, on the Terminal Server change the eMfg icon properties -->
ShortCut so the icon points to the new TSVntg.vtg just created.

I am having problems with my users getting into Vantage through Citrix.
One user can get in. Then usually anyone else gets the messages below.

The funny thing is this morning. I had 3 people in Vantage with no
problems,
now I can only get 1 person in.
Everyone else gets:
errno=22 reading promsgs file. It may have been deleted
Unable to format message number 290
errno=22 reading promsgs file. It may have been deleted
Unable to format message number 96
errno=22 reading promsgs file. It may have been deleted
Unable to format message number 6061
Then the splash screen disappears

I have seperate Vantage.vtg and .INI files set up. Each user has their
own
Vntgwork folder.
I'm using Vantage 4 and Win2K for the server.
I tried support and was emailed instructions to reinstall my Terminal
Services. After looking they are installed like the instructions say.
Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks
