Error 1432 New Server

Answerbook 465MPS has several things to try for diagnosing error 1432. If you have access to EpicWeb it would be good to look up. If not let me know off-list ( caugheyt@... ) and I can paste the text into an email. The article is for 4.00 but should apply to 5.1 just as well. In a nut shell it says....

"A 1432 error is caused by a failure of the client to communicate with the Vantage/Vista database on the database server."
....Then goes on to suggest various pinging and telnet steps. But the first thing it suggests is turning off Windows Firewall on XP (or Vista) clients. Another thought....the new server location is excluded from virus scanning, right?

Hi Todd,

Do you mean every single dll and ocx entry as well? I deleted a ton of
those, but not all of them. I got all other references, as well as the
server name and address.

Still no luck.

I then renamed the server and changed the IP address to that of the old
one, which I changed to something else, first. I tried running Vantage on
a data collection workstation after that. No luck. I uninstalled and
reinstalled Progress and Vantage Client. No luck.

Anxiety had gotten so high I couldn't think any more, so I postponed the
decommissioning of the old server.

Any more ideas?

There are an anoyingly large number of references to Vantage and Progress in the
registry. Far more than just the Progress and PSC references. Last time I did this
I had to search the registry for V: as well as the old server name. They all have
to go. There are hundreds of references.

Also, be sure the HOST and SERVICES files do not have references to the old
server. It also does not hurt to remove the old server from the Active Directory
computers entries as well as any references in DNS....as long as it is physically
going away.

Subject: [Vantage] Error 1432 New Server

Hi all!

Thanks again for the help a couple of weeks ago in getting Vantage running
on my new server. I was able to run a client ON the server with no problem
after your help.

Tomorrow, our old server is being torn down and packed up. Today, I had
set aside to migrate everyone to the new server. Much to my dismay, I get
"unable to connect" error 1432 from my workstation. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled the Progress software and Vantage client three times. I'm
guessing there's something left over from the old installation somewhere on
my PC. I deleted the Progress folder in Program Files, and deleted the PSC
key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE to no avail.

My server is called MESERVER and the DB is called Vantage. I'm on Vantage
5.1. This is my Vantage.vtg file text:

[Vantage Startup]
Executable=V:\PROGRESS\bin\prowin32.exe
Database=V:\VANTAGE\db\vantage
IniFile=V:\VANTAGE\vantage.ini
ParameterFile=V:\VANTAGE\db\Vantage.pf
ConnectOptions=-N TCP -H meserver -S epic51 -ld vantage
TempDirectory=C:\Vntgwork
StartupProcedure=mainmenu.w
OtherParameters=-rand 2 -q -basekey ini

Any ideas? I'm sweating bullets over here!

PING works fine. I have all users' share folders migrated and functioning.
I can create a file in the Vantage\DB directory, so I definitely have
access to it from my workstation.

Registry entries: I was afraid someone was going to say that. I guess I'd
better get started on mine...

The Progress folks don't have a "cleaning" program, huh?
