Epicor Express Blank Title 102616

Ours is hosted by Epicor and I'm quite happy with the speed. We're on a 35x5 cable connection with 14 concurrent sessions and the only time speed's an issue is when we're opening Crystal Reports. I don't think Epicor has a version whose implementation is wholly supported in this way but you could probably make a Windows server instance with Amazon's EC2 and RDS for SQL Server and use that vs some other third party hosting.

Epicor touts that over 100 users are using Epicor Express -- the SaaS (software as a service) cloud computing environment.
Anyone out there using it? Care to share your experience with Implementation, Operation, Updates, etc.?
Doing my first Epicor Express implementation.

Anyone out there want to share notes back and forth with me?

It has some particulars that make doing things convoluted.
For example:
* No access to the server; so any changes to a .rpt have to be requested through Epicor. They send you the .rpt and .xml if applicable, you modify and send back for installing

*No server browse out for loading the standard or extended posting rules; you have to ask Epicor for those

*Only LIVE and PILOT exist
*PILOT gets refreshed from LIVE on the 3rd Sunday of each month, so if you are doing setup you have to complete that, then wait for the 3rd Sunday and it gets pushed to PILOT so that you can do transactions; then you have to complete testing those before the 3rd Sunday of the next month before they are cleared from LIVE. Crazy!

*If you create a .p file you have to email it to Epicor for saving

*Essentially you have no server/browse out to capability; no access to the SQL or Progress environments or to the appservers - down? send a request to Epicor

And some other oddities.

Mannessa, perhaps there should be an Express folder area?

Wow, all of that is quite interesting. Note to self: Avoid Epicor Express.

I believe that's only a problem if it's hosted. But I might be wrong

Jose, that is their hosted or SaaS solution. When they went to Epicor 9 they abandoned the Vista offering. Now to compete in the software as a solution marketplace they went to hosted solutions, which is Epicor Express

There are other things you cannot do with Epicor Express such as you can't get the product configurator module

Is it possible to get to doc-link/APM with Express?

Jose, that is their hosted or SaaS solution. When they went to Epicor 9 they abandoned the Vista offering. Now to compete in the software as a solution marketplace they went to hosted solutions, which is Epicor Express

There are other things you cannot do with Epicor Express such as you can't get the product configurator module

Out of curiosity, I did a bit of research today on Epicor Express…  I get it now. It’s not meant for larger companies. It’s targeting smaller (very small) manufacturing companies that don’t want to lay out capital costs for new hardware, etc. It’s also a good segue for Vantage 6.x customers that want to upgrade and avoid all of the costs of conversions and upgrades. It sounds also like “ERP with Training Wheels” for those smaller companies implementing ERP for their first time. I asked my CAM and the product/offering is still evolving. Jim mentioned the inability to easily modify canned reports and create new BAQ Reports….. and all of that is true *at this time*. For those of us who consult with smaller companies, I can see where this would be appropriate. As the product evolves and demand from customers changes, I can see where this will also be easily scalable.

I see some drawbacks with this as with any SaaS offering……. For us control freaks, it may not be the best thing. But for those of us starting out, companies with little capital, etc….. this seems like a great deal to hit the ground running quickly.

Jim’s comments were enlightening and sparked this research… and it’s good to see that Epicor is already ahead of the curve and evolving the product to meet our demands.Â

Quick note, I'm on Epicor SaaS (Express) and I'm able to use the configurator module. Not easily but I'm able to. With BAQ's it runs quite slow so building them requires a bit of out-of-the-box thinking.

Who is Mannessa?

I'm currently implementing SaaS which, from what I heard is quite similar. We're using the configurator, mes for all employee time tracking, all of sales, amm, payroll and apm (production). We've gone live but I wouldn't say we'll be able to say we're golden for s few months. We had a local system with an mssql backend I built add-ons with via php, Google visualizations and other open source approaches. It's been very difficult to have to write everything in only the languages they approve. My configurators lagged an insane amount when I used baqs so I switched to dynamic lists, that's a little faster but still quite slow. The latest iteration, I've had to make a large number of pages with on prompt input rules that set flags to perform the logic I want. That's write fast and my users don't notice but it's considerably harder to maintain.

When issues arise, you have to call tech support. You have no access to the SaaS team directly so any task takes considerably longer to complete. We've had an issue with user sessions remaining active, despite the user logging out and, like some other issues, I didn't get a resolution for it…which brings me to the troubling part, some issues get trained, others, the techs just won't follow up. I currently can't make any calculations as document rules on my configurators. The issue got past to dev a week ago, nothing so far. Same goes for integrating our SharePoint site for attachments. The issue just lingers.

Beyond interacting with Epicor, make sure you identify what you'll be importing and how, dmt is an interesting tool. It doesn't appear to be threaded so, if you have large amounts of data to import, you'll have to open several instances, which go against your licenses.

During implementation we slowly brought configuration settings and master data to the live - this was a mistake because if a bit of functionality or flows didn't quite work out, there were no db images or back ups to restore, we just had to wait until the refresh and try again.

Sorry fellas, didn't realize I'd responded heh.

With Express you can do BAQs, searches, dashboards – all of the embedded tools that you’re used to using.Â

You can do your own reports. You just need the SaaS team to deploy at this time for you. I’ve heard this is evolving and could possibly change in the future. Hosting isn’t for everyone. I’ve worked on a colleague’s E9 system hosted by a third party and I wasn’t impressed with the speed or hosting cost. It has nothing to do with E9, per se, just hosting and being reliant upon your internet connection and hosting team.
