Epicor and AS 9100

We just purchased another company, they deal with Military and Aerospace which requires them to be ISO AS9100 certified. Their ERP system was nearly non existent and extremely out of date.

We have moved as much data as possible from their system to a new company in our Epicor system. To get prepared for the long-term, I’m seeking advice on how others use Epicor and stay ISO AS9100 compliant?

Some questions:

Product Serialization - How do we utilize product serial numbers in Epicor? Can we specify which parts, or part and customer combo, needs serialization? We don’t need serials on everything, just certain parts, maybe even certain parts going to certain customers.

Operation Traceability - Can I force employees to log every operation they do? What if they forget to log out? Is there anyway to end an operation at the end of day with a quantity of zero or completely remove the labor entry and make them re-enter the next day; or is there a better way to handle similar situations?

Contract Review - Orders that need to meet AS9100 need to be reviewed by Quality, Engineering, Production and Sales before being released, how can I make this happen in Epicor?

Appreciate any help you all can offer! TIA!

For Part Serialization, it is a checkbox on the Part screen. You can also opt to only track those Serials when shipping (Outbound only).
For Operation Tracability, use MES and Start/End Activity. If they do not log out, then you will first want to “train” your employee. Further actions can also be taken… However, there is a process to log out active employees.
Contract Review: The built in process for Tasks on the ECO is a decent tool.

Thanks @Jason_Woods, I appreciate the advice. I’ll take a look at these. I did find the checkbox in Part Entry, and I have took a quick glance at the Serial Assignment, Maintenance and Mask forms, but I’m completely lost; at the moment. I’ll have to study up on how these work and what areas they tie into.

I’m familiar with MES and the Start\End activity, and seems like “training” isn’t always effective. Maybe if it were backed up with some kind of disciplinary action…

I think tracking during shipping would be ideal, but I’ll have to speak with my project manager to verify. Thanks again!

User “training” really means “how do I handle this user who won’t do their job”

Okay, digging into this a little more today. Seems like we want full serial tracking, applied when jobs are created for specific parts.

I have a question about masking though. Is it possible to setup a mask that would look at the model numbers, date and then append a serialization? For example, we make a 70 series caster on 1-5-21, is it possible for us to create a mask that would look at this and create serials such as 70-010521-00001, 00002, and so on. If so, could you point me where to look or give a short example?

You can set up masks by individual part numbers or a standalone mask that can be assigned to a group of parts. It sounds like you’d create a mask for each model (masks also carry the counter so if you counting by model…) and assign it to the parts. The date would be the day the serial number was generated which may or may not match the exact day it was made depending on when you assign them and how long to manufacture.

That masking may be possible, but if not, it is possible to customize the Serial Number Selection screen to generate serials like this.
