I am not going to be much help other than to offer food for thought. Are you using Mass Print? I have had the opposite problem in that if I check the Mass Print box and then, from the Actions/print menu, try to print a traveler it will populate with a date printed but won't actually print the traveler. I don't believe I have even had a traveler print and not had a date in that field.
