Epicor 9 Hardware Sizing

One thing I have learned from Epicor is to be very careful in what you define as "performance". If you define it as reads/writes, concurrent users, or some measurable number that you can track you will be fine. If you define it as "how fast Epicor is" you are going to have a bad time.

Could I get some opinions on the hardware sizing guide provided by Epicor? We are preparing to upgrade from Vantage 3.03 to E9 and wanted to see if the server that we are planning to build will be capable of running E9 with decent performance. The server will exceed all requirements, except for the processor, which is where our question lies. The sizing guide ranges from 1-40 users, then from 41-150 users. Our company has about 45-50 license and may use around 40 concurrently, so we are right on the border. How important would it be for us to put 4 CPU's in the server. The problem, as I am sure that you are all aware, is the difficulty (and increased cost) of the motherboard, chassis, etc. when using more than 2 CPU's.

My question boils down to this: Would performance be better on a server with 4 four-core CPU's at 2.2 GHz each (16 cores total), or 2 ten-core CPU's at 3.0 GHz each (20 cores total)?

In case it matters, the server will exceed requirements in every other area (128 GB RAM, all solid state drives, etc. The server will be for our Database and AppServers.

Thanks,
Jay
I've been installing and managing Epicor for several years now. Still to this day I haven't found a single installation that even gets close to pushing the CPU. The biggest bottle-neck is always the Hard Drives. I say you'll be fine with your 2 CPU's. That's just my opinion , though like I said I've been doing this for quite a while

I agree.  Epicor is far from processor-intensive.  RAM and disk I/O are the most important factors and the usual bottlenecks.  You'll be more than fine with your current configuration.

Thanks, Jose and Vic, for the information. That was what I figured, based upon our performance in Vantage.

Hi all,

Does anyone know where the check box is to "flag" when moving more pieces into inventory than produced"?  When we process to inventory after reporting production?
Material Management>Gen Op>Job receipt to inventory.
Open call with Epicor.
Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

Does anyone know where the check box is to "flag" when moving more pieces into inventory than produced"? When we process to inventory after reporting production?

We're looking to not move more pieces into inventory than we produced.  I'm not sure who, why or how this happens, but maybe a"flag" warning them will stop the transfers.

There is a message that pops up if you are receiving more than was produced when enter a job receipt to inventory. It happens quite often for us since our people don’t enter a quantity until they are logging out of a job but it doesn’t effect anything.

We're looking to not move more pieces into inventory than we produced. I'm not sure who, why or how this happens, but maybe a"flag" warning them will stop the transfers.

Hi all,

Does anyone know where the check box is to "flag" when moving more pieces into inventory than produced"? When we process to inventory after reporting production?
Material Management>Gen Op>Job receipt to inventory.
Open call with Epicor.
Thanks in advance.

That's the problem, we're not getting that message.  Was hoping there was a check box or somewhere we can enable this.

I don’t think so… We have always had it. We tried to disable it but we can’t do that either.

That's the problem, we're not getting that message. Was hoping there was a check box or somewhere we can enable this.

Check the quantity completed on the last operation on your job. I believe this is where the completed quantity comes from.

If labor isn’t being reported correctly (under), you will not get the message.

One thing to note, there are some processor intensive things that get run, like some really large reports, COS/WIP, MRP.

Right now, Vantage/Epicor is a single threaded system, meaning one process that needs to be run will only use one core, and one core will only work on one process at a time. This is usually fine since many actions take fractions of a second. However, if you ever have times that you run many large reports at the same time, or to be able to use multiple processes and threads for something like MRP, you need to have enough cores to handle it.

It’s rare but it can happen, one customer I worked with had problems because of how their buyers would run the time phase material requirements reports, and run a bunch at a time, each one of them would grad a whole core, crank it to 100% the entire time the report was running, and they had a habit of running a whole bunch at once, then combine that with all the other stuff, it actually maxed out the processors in the system on a regular basis. At that point, they couldn’t change anything with the server so it became a user management issue to control when the reports were run.

Yes, that is a tad anecdotal, but it’s relevant and something to think about, back to your specific situation though the thing to keep in mind is the total cores, you should be fine with the 2 10cores versus the 4 4cores, that’s 1core per slightly over 2 users, that should be plenty. I would warn of caution though given that this will be both Epicor and SQL on the same machine, which by the guide is not recommended.

Just make sure you divvy up your disks into multiple arrays to help split up the I/O channels, even with SSD, don’t go with 1 giant array with all the drives, and don’t go RAID 5 either, sometimes you can get away with it, but more often than not, it comes back to bite ya.

I agree.  Epicor is far from processor-intensive.  RAM and disk I/O are the most important factors and the usual bottlenecks.  You'll be more than fine with your current configuration.

Thanks,
Jay

Certainly SSDs and gobs of RAM will help.

I have been on the performance issues treadmill....blame game....whatever you want to call it before.  At least go with the Epicor minimum requirements.. Then at least to you say to them you have met or exceeded them. Also have the benchmarks available to clearly point out that your hardware does meet the requirements.

Epicor have got some openedge scripts that help benchmark your system (CPU and I/O).  I highly suggest you seek them out, and if possible see if you can get the compatible specced server from your vendor on a trial basis.  It is extreemly hard to prove what mix of hardware is going to give you the right performance on paper or have information about other hardware setups with the same software on it, unless you can try it.

Good luck.
