Epicor 9.04 via VPN

Shouldn't be because that sounds like the same laptop I'm using. I know
that we had CA antivirus software and I have removed that. Now I'm using
ESET NOD32. How many users do you have accessing the VPN during the day?

Beth,
The PC he's using is as follows;
* Dell Latitude E6510
* Intel Dual Core i5 2.66GHz
* 4 GB RAM
* Windows 7 32-bit
I just remember when he started a year ago, I had to get the laptop
quickly so I took what they could ship fast. Normal it would have been
a Quad Core, i7, 64-bit laptop.
Could this be part of the issue? Because I test VPN on my laptop this
morning from home and it didn't seem as slow as he was saying.
Thanks, Norman

Looking for some help. We have one employee who works full time on
the opposite coast via VPN. He's been complaining about sessions dying,
reports stalling when previewing them, and slow software performance
overall. He thinks that things seem "better" when the office is closed and
no one is here. I'm thinking we need to increase our bandwidth with our
ISP, but before I talk to management about that I want to check here to see
if anyone had any words of wisdom.

Maybe there are some settings I should check either in Epicor, or our
firewall? Below is what I'm working with.

*Epicor*: 9.04.507a Progess
*Firewall/VPN*: SonicWall NSA 240 using Global VPN Client
*Bandwidth test @ office*: *2.5 *Mbps down & up
*Bandwidth test @ remote location w/o VPN*: *25 *Mbps down &* 4* Mbps up
*Bandwidth test @ remote location w/ VPN connected*: *1.5* Mbps down &
*1.5* Mbps
down
*Local ping to the server*: 1ms
*Remote ping to the server*: 115ms

The question is will faster bandwidth here at the office fix it? How much
bandwidth is "enough"? Or is it something else?

Easiest and cheapest solution would be to create a virtual desktop, or give
him a physical machine that only he uses to RDP into. Then he would be
running everything completely local to your environment and he won't have
the same level of problems.

Or if you have a terminal server, you could use that instead, but loading up
Hyper V on a low demand server and installing an XP or 7 image onto it would
alleviate a lot of issues for you and allow for easier control and recovery.

I’m 80% remote via VPN and I use the VPN only while I do customizations. Other than that, I’ll RDP in.

Vantage/Epicor doesn’t work too bad, all things considered, over a VPN. Hefty reports and hitting F1 for help are no-no’s.

I have been doing this for 2 years+. There are many combinations of ways to
improve speed but I wouldn't necessarily bump your bandwidth any further.
RDP is a good option, though you have to tie up another device. Terminal
server is another good option, if you have one, otherwise it's a bit pricey.

When I'm working from home (which I do every evening), I connect via VPN (we
use a CISCO device) and use my regular connection. When I first started
this, I was using an older laptop with XP running on it. Since then I
purchased a Windows 7 i5 machine with 4GB RAM. I use my home wireless
router which is connected via DSL. It's pretty fast. What type of computer
is your user using? Remember that Epicor need a lot of overhead to run. I
also do my upgrades to Epicor from home using the VPN.

We are on 9.04.507A/SQL.

Just my two cents.

Beth,
The PC he's using is as follows;
* Dell Latitude E6510
* Intel Dual Core i5 2.66GHz

* Windows 7 32-bit
I just remember when he started a year ago, I had to get the laptop

Could this be part of the issue? Because I test VPN on my laptop this
morning from home and it didn't seem as slow as he was saying.

The laptop specs are fine. Your ping response time is dreadful. We notice 80-90ms is "acceptable". Over 90ms is dreadful. 100+ is OUCH!

Beth,
The PC he's using is as follows;
* Dell Latitude E6510
* Intel Dual Core i5 2.66GHz
* 4 GB RAM
* Windows 7 32-bit
