EDI popularity poll

We are an automotive supplier and our customers require that we use EDI.
Are EDI costs are not too bad because we use individual client software,
instead of an expensive server.
Currently, we are in our 3rd month of our Vantage 6.1 implementation and
barely off the ground with the migration of our EDI to an outsource company
(www.enabletrading.com) which was suggested by Epicor. This company provides
the translation templates and is the middleman for all EDI transmissions for
the Vantage Enhanced EDI Interface. The cost is less then the Gentran
server, and it removes the requirement to have specialized EDI personnel
in-house, as the EDI information flows directly into Vantage (at least,
that's the theory, I have yet to see it in action).

The future of EDI was supposed to be XML, but it has yet to materialize.
When the big automakers of the world move to XML, so will we.

That is exactly what I am trying to get our customers to do, supply us
with a web portal, running a GENTRAN server or the like is just not cost
effective. But for those that don't listen I have looked around, and I'm
thinking of implementing an outsourced solution by www.covalentworks.com
which seems to be a sensible both $$ and solution wise.

Darren:

I can only speak for my company, but while we get requests about EDI
sometimes, most of our really BIG guys (Detroit Diesel, Hamilton
Sundstrand,
Rolls Royce) realized that the expense of EDI was pretty prohibitive for
little guys like us. They all have websites that we download info and
input
info to -- I just think that unless you are already using EDI with other
customers, best to inquire about the internet sites first. Every time
someone runs in here with an EDI request, we've resolved it with a
website
hookup.

True, we pay a small fee (less than $200 a year total) for some of
these,
but I felt that EDI technology was kind of "dead" five years ago. I
know
that over time the "manpower" for this kind of info-gathering and input
costs us as well, but they are here anyhow. We've never lost a customer
or
potential customer over this -- but maybe we're just lucky.

And, on the other issue, I recently read that wages are getting so high
for
technology folks in India and Pakistan that they are considering
"outsourcing." Maybe to Iowa? Probably Malaysia. Maybe it was a joke.
Don't want to start any nasty internet rumors.

During a recent marketing meeting at our organization, I was asked if I
felt
we should spend the money to implement EDI. In my 13 years with this
company we have had 3 requests for EDI. Each time the customer backed
down
after initially threatening us to go else where if we didn't comply. (2
out
of 3 times they found a way to continue to do business with us). We are
a
small company facing tight competition from foreign markets. We can not
afford these extra costs that big corporations continue to force upon us
and
at the same time meet their demands to decrease the price of our goods.
It
seems like the days of the small American Manufacturers are limited.
Let's
hear it for a global economy!!! yippeee.... The only way a global
economy
will work is if the playing field is leveled. Raise wages in foreign
countries to our level or risk bringing down wages here to their level.
Wouldn't that be a few steps backwards!!

What does the future hold for EDI? Is it something viable or just a
passing
trend? Would it make us more attractive to large business if we were
EDI
capable?

EDI, for us, is a complete customer imposition and provides us with no benefits whatsoever. Fortunately it has steadily faded and most of our larger customers have alternatives such as web portals where their systems can interface with our people. If we were a "make to stock" environment and used MRP at all then pumping a customer's forecasts and orders directly into our system might provide some benefit but in our "job shop" role doing EDI is strictly a matter of satisfying the customer.

We have had only one customer that was absolutely adamant about our dealing with their EDI messages and we now do that through an email based VAN. We get about 6 messages a month so on top of the $4.95 flat fee for the server the total runs about $11 a month. The EDI messages are converted to plain text and emailed to us. We have never had a customer require invoices and communication back to them via EDI. As stated, nost now use web portals. I think EDI is about dead. We have bigger issues complying with RoHs, special labeling on shipments and probably someday RFID. The costs for such services may not show up as a line item but they are definitely factored into the price of products - sort of like not charging for special packaging but knocking the price up a few cents per piece.
