Gary,
Yes, and not really. It does the job, but not right out of the box.
Originally, Epicor said it would match ANSI X12 3020 standard for the
documents with which it deals (invoice, purchase order, advanced ship
notice, and planning schedule). We went out and bought pre-made EDI maps
that matched that standard and tried to use them. When they didn't work I
figured out that one field was one character off. If you've been doing EDI
for any length of time you'll know that this makes your translator stop in
its tracks.
When the next update of the module came out, they said it would no longer
match the 3020 standard, but would instead be an amalgamation of a number of
standards which would provide the most users with the greatest flexibility.
So, now not only was the money we spent on the pre-made maps a waste, but
now we had to find a way to get the incoming 3020 documents mapped to the
new non-standard maps Vantage would accept.
Of course, the custom programming group was happy to charge us for doing
this (after we had already spent $8,000 on the module itself). We decided
instead to buy application integration mapping software from Sterling
Commerce (almost as expensive, but at least we're in charge of our own EDI
destiny instead of having to pay custom programming every time something
changes) and do it ourselves.
To add a little light to a posting that has been doom-and-gloom, now that
we've been through all the initial headaches, the EDI module is saving us
time. With the touch of a button it will export invoices to a file for your
translator. Process that file, send it, and you're done.
I hope I've given you a good idea of what to expect. If the 4 documents the
module accomodates are enough for you and you are able to take care of
translation one way or another, it's not too bad.
