EDI Module

We have a few customers that send us EDI releases on their orders about twice a week. We have to print out each order and manually review each and every part and compare the order to what is in Vantage. We then have to go and make changes like order quantities, due dates, making it firm or unfirm, etc..

Would the EDI module automatically make those changes in vantage for us and just give us a change report OR would we still have to make those changes?

Thanks,
Jasper

Just wondering if anyone uses the EDI module for 4.00 and if it is any good?

Gary,

Yes, and not really. It does the job, but not right out of the box.
Originally, Epicor said it would match ANSI X12 3020 standard for the
documents with which it deals (invoice, purchase order, advanced ship
notice, and planning schedule). We went out and bought pre-made EDI maps
that matched that standard and tried to use them. When they didn't work I
figured out that one field was one character off. If you've been doing EDI
for any length of time you'll know that this makes your translator stop in
its tracks.

When the next update of the module came out, they said it would no longer
match the 3020 standard, but would instead be an amalgamation of a number of
standards which would provide the most users with the greatest flexibility.
So, now not only was the money we spent on the pre-made maps a waste, but
now we had to find a way to get the incoming 3020 documents mapped to the
new non-standard maps Vantage would accept.

Of course, the custom programming group was happy to charge us for doing
this (after we had already spent $8,000 on the module itself). We decided
instead to buy application integration mapping software from Sterling
Commerce (almost as expensive, but at least we're in charge of our own EDI
destiny instead of having to pay custom programming every time something
changes) and do it ourselves.

To add a little light to a posting that has been doom-and-gloom, now that
we've been through all the initial headaches, the EDI module is saving us
time. With the touch of a button it will export invoices to a file for your
translator. Process that file, send it, and you're done.

I hope I've given you a good idea of what to expect. If the 4 documents the
module accomodates are enough for you and you are able to take care of
translation one way or another, it's not too bad.

Gary,
We tried to use the EDI module without success, plus Sterling was doing
mapping for us and we found this costly and inaccurate. In addition
Sterling wanted to charge us to return to "fix" their problems.

Out of the box the Vantage EDI module does not work. We could not get any
favorable comment from this venue on EDI. Talking to Epicor the response we
got was to go through custom programming because almost no one using Vantage
was doing EDI. Custom programming wanted some big bucks, 8-10 grand, to get
things going as need for just 830's and 856's. When we asked about the code
they said it would be Epicor's and they could use it wherever and whenever
they wanted. I asked so you might charge me this amount, and the same to
the next customer and use "my" code, their response was yes. I don't agree
with this philosophy.

Our solution, I talked with Calvin Dekker of Misha1. Calvin is working with
Caesar Development on an EDI "package" to work with Vantage. We are working
to get it up and going now (we are one of the first 10 customers doing
"beta" on the software). Caesar has a lot of experience at writing add-ons
for Vantage, we use some other things and they work well. This package is
designed to use the "raw" EDI data and format it as necessary for Vantage
and process it in and out. Compared to custom programming the cost is
nominal and allows our users to input and/or update maps as well.

If you are interested in our solution, give me a call or e-mail me off line
and I will be happy to provide phone numbers etc.

We are looking to implement EDI in our Vantage 4.0. We purchased the EDI
module from Epicor but were unable to make it work properly without a lot of
custom programming. Does anyone use the EDI from EB2B Commerce (
www.eb2b.com <http://www.eb2b.com/> ) or had any conversations with them?
Currently we are using Sterling Commerce and would like to get away from
them.

The EDI Module allows for the import of 830 and 850 documents and the export of 856 and 810 documents.

Basically allows you to automate much of the manual data entry the associated transactions.

You'll also need a Mapping program to map the fields between the Vantage import/export data and your trading partners edi data.

The real benefit of this module would be if you do high volume transactions. Or, if like us, a large customer dictates it's usage!

not to much

don't buy the EDI Module. Use an other application to get data out
Vantage by means of ODBC (for instances). If you have MRP you can import
forecast.

Stephan
