E10 handheld - recommended device for picking materials?

We are wanting to get our pickers a handheld device so we can start scanning barcodes(to improve quality of picked items) and so they can more efficiently update Epicor with out having to continually walk back and forth to a computer(to update MES with jobs they’ve picked, or materials to be issued) and the area where materials are stored.

We’re hoping to minimize configuration/development, so our hope is to find a device that is “most” compatible out of the box with E10. Any recommendations?

If we look into it again I think we will get $100 android tablets instead of $2000 scanner. Epicor has a “Mobile Warehouse” add-on that lets you do a lot of data entry through an app on the app store.

We are preparing to implement Epicor Mobile Warehouse with Honeywell CK65 Long Range scanners for material handlers.
Really happy with how our testing and simulation is progressing.

For a recent client we used the Honeywell CK65. We also looked at the CN80. The CK65 works very well, has a good range for scanning and is rugged. Once you get things dialed in, they just work.

Some things to consider:

  • Will they be personally assigned, or shared? If shared, get a rugged scanner, or at least a tether so the scanner cannot hit the floor. People don’t take as good of care when they are shared.
  • As @kylepbsps pointed out, the scanners are pricey. Another client used a tablet mounted on a cart with a corded scanner attached. The LS2208 are the industry workhorse for this type of scanner. We bought ours on eBay - not pretty but seem to last forever.
  • Barcode labels need to be tweaked for your particular scanning needs and warehouse plan. If close range they can be small. Longer range need to be appropriately larger. Small boxes stored high are tough to scan. Test out on the floor, not just the conference room.
  • 123Scan, a free utility from Zebra, is a great tool for testing barcodes and configuring scanners. I’ve mostly used it with corded LS2208 scanners.

Bluetooth scanner connected to a tablet might also work. They do sell these mini scanner usb adapters also.
I think there is much for benefit on having a tablet you can interact with than a scanner. Email, Photos, etc.

I’ve used Intermec ck71 in the past and they worked pretty well for hardware, we ended up switching to a WMS software for picking so that was no longer taking place in Epicor.

Thanks for the suggestion, I don’t see an app in the Google Play store for “Mobile Warehouse”. A search leads me to “Epicor Mfg Wireless Warehouse EMWW”. Is this the app you suggested?

They have changed the name a few times, that is the latest iteration yes.

What’s the advantage of using an Android tablet running Epicor Mfg Wireless Warehouse EMWW as compared to a Windows tablet running the full version of Epicor?

Please keep in mind I have no experience with handhelds, so could be missing a huge difference…

The mobile apps will have a lot more driven towards barcode scanning and quick lookup. Also the REST API is utilized which I’ve found in most implementations tends to be snappier than the full Client.

Someone installed this app on an Android phone and we think we have the server setup correctly, but now it’s asking us for the company but there is nothing to chose from in the dropdown. Any pointers?

Kind of odd but the first attempt it wouldn’t load the company/site, but after trying again it worked and we are in!!! Seems like a really handy app, we can use job tracker, order tracker, pick materials, etc. We used the demo mode in case that is helpful for anyone else following this thread. We’ll have to dig into what limitations this has and how to install the license still, but that app is pretty snappy and seems to have a lot of useful features for someone on the production floor.

Thanks very much for this suggestion, I think this could be a nice path forward for us!

I have also installed the Wireless Warehouse application. I like the “Outbound Orders” menu where you can process picking transactions (STK-SHP for stock order or PUR-SHP for BTO order).

By any chance, did you find out how to ship a MTO order? When the last operation of a job is completed, no transaction is generated for us to process with the shipping. I don’t even understand how to add lines to a manually created packing-slip.

For stock and BTO orders, the “Picked Orders” menu works well for automatically generating the packing-slip with a line.
