E10: Changing System Manager Account Password

No, I have it just as the user for the SystemTaskAgent.

I don’t suggest anyone use it to actually use the system, only one person ever knows it’s password, but I usually set it up as print/print because the user should have no rights, so therefore shouldn’t be able to access anything in the system.

I use the login as an administrative way for customers to check to see what is “open” in their system as a security doublecheck.

All reports should be printed by users, even things like MRP shouldn’t be run from Manager, that account should really just be a backup account that no one should be logging in with because it doesn’t give anyone responsibility for whatever that user does.

Thanks Ned.  So I understand what you use the print user id specifically for besides as another way to access Epicor-  You add a user called print and then use this user to print reports?  Sorry, don't mean to be so daft.  New to the system.

Thanks.

I encountered an issue yesterday when I changed the default password on the Manager account.  After changing it, I was unable to print preview reports.  When I looked at the System Monitor, all of the reports I had tried to print preview were listed under scheduled tasks for 5 hours in the future.  The reports for all users were also queued up under Immediate Run in the System Agent.  I tried rebooting the server, but that did not fix the problem and also made sure I changed the Manager account password in the System Agent before the reboot.  Is there anywhere else I need to change it to make so that I can successfully change the default System Manager account password?

You need to login as the manager and use the change password option in the program, once you change that password, you then need to update the password on the system task agent.

Also, I would suggest creating a user named print with no security privileges other than allowing impersonation.

I went through this exact trauma a few weeks ago.  I ended up changing the manager password back to “manager” and then created a new Epicor user account named AppManager.  I then used AppManager in the properties for the App Pools (in Admin Console) of the databases I wanted to change (Test, Pilot and Live) and also had to change the System Agent account and password under System Setup -> System Maintenance -> System Agent.  I left Training as is because I restore it twice a week so it would always revert back anyway.

I really think Epicor needs to review how they deliver systems they set up and not use the same “Manager” account that they use for the Training DB as the account the system agent and App Pools use.  As soon as this was running I changed the Manager password to something else.  All our users know manager/manager and as soon as we started putting semi-live data in Pilot and Test they were logging to those in as Manager, despite having their own named account.  Very dangerous to allow that access but changing the Manager password breaks everything.

Epicor has since changed their training/demo DB to use Epicor/Epicor instead of manager/manager.

Not using the manager username and password isn’t that much of a problem, just need to make sure it is updated anywhere that it’s used once it is changed.

I find 2 main benefits to the print user.

1-      It’s a user that no one will actually use, and it’s not the manager.

2-      It gives you a user who is not given any special permissions, so you can use it as a check to see what “everyone” might have access to.

We were told to use Epicor/Epicor at the start but all the Embedded Education courses were saying to use manager/manager which was confusing people.  When I questioned this with the documentation people I got a response to NOT user Epicor/Epicor because it had elevated rights.  Of course the people doing documentation always know what’s right.  ;)
