E10: 9.05.702A Progress Database Migration Error - Resolved

For what is worth I just had this same issue happen on another migration, I was hosting the intermediate DB On the Standard SQL the issue was that I needed special SQL Drivers in the Migration Box. I installed SQL Express in the Migration Box Restarted Admin console, and its working now

Thanks!

Thanks All for the help.

While the migration instructions say that SQL Server Express can be used, I believe SQL Server Express was the problem.
I uninstalled Express and installed Standard on my Epicor 9 server and I have gotten past this error and the migration process is running right now.

Based on some of the testing I did before uninstalling Express, I believe Express requires some additional configuration changes before you can use it to host the interim DB.
I’m not positive but having Standard work without any issue leads me to make this guess.

One thing that I didn’t know, which would have forced me to use Standard anyways, is that the max DB size is only 10GB in Express. Our Progress DB is 22GB so it’s likely the interim DB would have exceeded 10GB.

I hope this helps someone else down the road. :)

How I was able to get it to work is.

Create a blank DB in SQL and make sure you give permissions for the administrative account!! Use that DB as the interim DB for Migration.

Going back a couple steps. Do you know for sure the E9 DB is started?

Thanks Jose.

I tried this and got the same thing.

Here is what I did:

1) Shared the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA with a share name of DATA

2) Updated the Output folder to: \\SERVERNAME\DATA<file:///\\SERVERNAME\DATA>

3) Restarted the migrations process.

4) Same error

If I look in the output folder, I see the two database files (MDF, LDF), CreateDB.sql, and ProgressToSQLMigration_TableStatistics.txt
So it can access this folder and create files but still the same error.

You need to share the folder where your SQL DataBase will be created your temporary DB. And make that the output folder should be something like
C:\ProgramFIles\Microsoft SQL\MSSQL\DATa

I then change the output folder to \\SERVERNAME\ProgressOutput<file:///\\SERVERNAME\ProgressOutput<file:///\\SERVERNAME\ProgressOutput%3cfile:\SERVERNAME\ProgressOutput>>

The output folder is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Epicor Software Corporation\Database Manager Extensions\3.0.7\DB Migration\Progress Output

That needs to be (at least in my case when I've done it) that needs to be the same folder that contains your MDF SQL file for the Intermediate DB and it needs to be a shared location such as \\XX\myServer\XX<file:///\\XX\myServer\XX>
If you are installing the intermediate DB in the local SQL Express then make sure you share the folder where the DB will be placed and make that the Output Folder

We have one server that is setup as a 9.05.702A server that I installed the E10 Admin Console and SQL Server Express and our E10.0.700.2 is installed on a separate server.
I am running the database migration on the 9.05 server.

My Progress Parameter file path is valid. Just confirmed it.
The output folder is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Epicor Software Corporation\Database Manager Extensions\3.0.7\DB Migration\Progress Output

There appear to be no other options for directories that I can change.
The process is creating the interim database in the output path above.
The whole thing only runs for less than a minute before it craps out.

Jose, to your reply, I’m not sure I follow. When you say “So it would be a shared directory on your sql server” do you mean on my E10 server or on the E9.05 server?

Joe,

You can expect your interm DB to be about 40 Gb and the final SQL db to be about 100 Gb.  I started with a 24 Gb progress db and that it where I ended up.

If you can make the final SQL db start at 100 Gb  You will save some time on the load.  Then the E10 SQL Db will not need to expand when the data is being loaded.

And one final note.  Let me know if you get by step 500 - IceSystemTablesMigration.   I have a call still open with Epicor to get by this step.  This is trying to open a linked server from E10 back to the interm DB.  It errors every time because of security issue on the connection.  I ended up manually running the SQL batch files from the E10 sever to get past that step.

100GB! I’m was not expecting that.

How long did step the first step take for you (10 – Convert a source Progress DB to a interim SQL DB)?
Right now I’m at 18 hours and it’s still chugging away.

In case I do get stuck at step 500, can you elaborate on how you ran the SQL batch files to get past it?

18 hours??? That’s insane!!!

It should not take that long! Something is not set up correctly… You know you should change some settings on the server to allow for high performance?!

I had a 20GB progress DB and it took me less than 4 hours to complete. My DB was about 60 GB when it finished.

Yeah, my Epicor 9.05.702A server is running in a virtual machine. I created it just for this conversion.
OpenEdge is “right out of the box” with no tweaks and the VM only has 8GB of RAM.
On my next migration, I will try to tweak OpenEdge and assign more RAM to the VM.

It took about 13 hours.  I was exporting the data to an SSD drive.  So that might have speed things up for me.

For set 500.  I logged into the E10 server and manually created the linked server.  Then ran the *.sql files located in this folder.  C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Epicor Software Corporation\Database Manager Extensions\3.0.7\DB Migration   The error log pointed out which ones tried to run.

When I get a chance I will post the complete list.

Joe,

Here are the sql files that need to be run from the E10 SQL db server.  I have a call open with Epicor to get this to work automatically like the other conversions.  But by running this scripts I was able to get a conversion done from V9 progress to V10

Joe,

I get an error about NT Authority not able to access the database.  But, I would give it a try.  The scripts need to be run from the E10 server.

Tom

Thanks Tom.
I'll give it a go.

After I run those scripts, do I just continue the migration process starting with the next step?

Joe,

Yes after they run, start at the next step.
Hi Tom,

When trying to run the second script file (MigrateICETables), I see that there are place holders a few times.
I’m assuming you just updated these in each case.
Also what was the database you ran these under? Meaning USE what DB? I assume it’s my target DB.

Joe,

I put in a 'USE targerdb' at the beginning.

Then I swapped out the variables to match the migration db like this.  'from SourceLinkServer.MIG9.dbo.XFileAttch'
