Is it possible to create a Drop Shipment for an item that is normally inventoried?
It appears that only BTO(Buy To Order) lines can be drop shipped, and that the Order Release info (ship to add) sets the destination when creating a PO.
Every now and then we need to ship something that we normally stock directly to a job site where we’re doing an install. It might be because we our out in the factory, and can’t afford (time or cost) to ship it twice (once to our factory and then once to job site).
Because the part on the original order was entered using our stocked P/N, We can’t make that line a BTO. So what we do is to enter it like a regular PO (with our warehouse as the Ship To) and verbally tell the supplier to drop ship it to XYZ… But when the PO prints, it’s going to indicate the Ship To is our warehouse, and not XYZ…
The Line/Release needs to be set as BTO and DS. We were able to accomplish this by creating an updatable dashboard for our Buyers to use (they don’t have access to Sales Order Entry). They find the Order/Line/Release that they need to DS and update that Release, then make their PO.
This also works in reverse, where the Release was DS and now it doesn’t need to be. Update the release, then remove the SO Link from the PO.
But yes. At the PO header level, you can choose a Cust/ShipTo combo to be the default for the PO - remembering that PO lines may over ride this if they are BTO on the Order, and specific ShipTo or OTS set up.
I was trying to do it at the Line/Release level. Which isn’t a big deal as these “drop ship” PO’s are one off, and can be separate from regular PO’s to the same supplier.
