Document Management (paperless/wireless shop enviro nment)

We are using the Document Management here to make prints available to anyone
that has access to Vantage 4.0, but we are not paperless. We still print
copies of the prints and Job Travelers for use in production. We have 9
data collection terminals spread out on the floor for labor reporting, and
it works quite well to get real-time information on jobs. With the vast
number of machines we have on the floor and 200 employees, it was not
feasible to view a print or traveler from a terminal.

(paperless/wireless shop environment)

I'd like to ask, if anyone else is using Document Management
on the
shopfloor to view prints, work instructions, etc. We would
appreciate learning from others, so as to make less mistakes
in
implementing this process.

We are looking into going paperless and wireless out on our
shopfloor. (We manufacture mobile pc carts, that we will
use to
implement this.) We are looking to purchase either laptops,
thin
clients, or other pc solutions. This will be the easy part.

We have been linking engineering print files (using pdf's)
to our
parts in document management.

We are anticipating having several of these mobile stations
in each
deparment, depending on the amount of employees within the
department.

This would require purchasing Vantage Data Collection
Licenses. This
is were we have a concern. The Data Collection licenses are
going to
cost more than our hardware for each station. There has
been talk of
purchasing another Document Management Software, so that we
do not
have to use Vantage. This would mean maintaining two
systems. I
realize we could use the "time-out" but it would not be
efficient to
have the employees have to log in each time they used the
computer
station.

Has anyone an opinion, that has some type of similar system
set up
already? I really want to avoid having to purchase and
maintain
another document management system outside of Vantage.

This is what I came up with. Seems to be working well but we have only been
using it for about 5 weeks. I have been surprised at how much our employees
use it. Works fine in Terminal Services.

I used the Vantage drawing and docassoc table and linked it to an Access
Database.
Then I created an Access Form that uses the Drawing and DocAssoc data from
Vantage to track, open and close files.

We run SQL Server so I was also able to download a twain plug-in for VBA/VB
and now I am able to scan documents and enter data directly into our SQL
Database. I have done some testing with these plug-ins and Progress and
they seem to work ok so once I have the programs functioning as I like then
I plan to migrate them to Progress. I'm new to Progress but I have been
writing VB/VBA Apps for years so its easier for me to design them in VBA/VB
and then move them to Progress. This saves allot of time. We also use an
SQL Server mail agent event to notify the proper personnel that new
documents have been scanned.

I have MS Office 2000 Developers Edition so I can build the run time files
needed to avoid purchasing a copy of Office or Access for every machine that
is running this form.

I am currently working on the 2nd revision which is planned to be rolled out
next Thursday. It has the ability to track items by part number.

If you want a copy of the interface I have written just let me know. The
viewer should work fine with the Progress Database as long as you have an
ODBC driver.
