Can anyone supply some high point differences between the new Epicor 9
and Vantage 8.00.xx? We are considering the upgrade from 8.00.811b to
Epicor 9 but would like a better understanding of the benefits before we
proceed with our CAM.

Thanks in advance for any information you are able to share.

The 'Business without Barriers Summit" should cover the differences. It is mainly focused at Epicor 9. April 30 in Minneapolis (as well as other dates in other cities). Check the Epicor web site for detail if you have not already received one or more emails.

One thing we are looking for in 9 is greater flexibility in Chart of Accounts structure (200 character, up to 20 segments, controlled segments and dynamic segments). I believe the financials have substantially changed with the inclusion of the iScala financial parts. A couple things of note are cancellation invoices and reversal of cash receipts (for bounced checks). Also much better customer rollups under top level accounts...replaces the Customer master parent relations. So I was told at Perspectives. There's a bunch more stuff mostly of interest to the bean counters that went way over my IT head.

Hi,

My understanding is that the financials are much improved. Based around a routing engine. I believe you can create your routings based on transactions. There are some resources on the epicor site.

I also believe the feature of a "Drop Ship" is built into Epicor 9 versus
being a customization and service connect routine like in 8.xx.

Although i have not actually used 9 yet to confirm this, just what I was
told.

At risk of a double post (never know with delays lately)...

The 'Business without Barriers Summit" should cover the differences. It is mainly focused at Epicor 9. April 30 in Minneapolis (as well as other dates in other cities). Check the Epicor web site for detail if you have not already received one or more emails.

You were told correctly. It's called One-Time-Ship-to or OTS. It must be
enabled for each customer to allow it on the Sales Order. You can change the
sales order for that one shipment. Later, you can convert it to an actual
ship-to. The one potential downsize is it may be a path to ship out of
territory and you would lose that traceability if it's needed.

You can download the feature summary here:
https://epicweb.epicor.com/doc/Docs/Epicor9FeatureSummary_904502.pdf

Mark W.
That's not a Drop Shipment, that's a one time alternate ship to.

Drop Ship is more for a distribution/retail organization for supply chain
management where I get an order for a product I do not manufacture. Enter
the order, mark it as a drop ship and then all background processes are done
to allow that order to be put into the MRP, PO Suggestion automatically
generated, PO to my supplier automatically generated, and the order is
manually placed and then shipped directly from my supplier to my customer.

Yes, I seemed to recall it being called a "Buy-To Order". On the Sales Order
release, you indicate the Supplier and check the "Drop Ship" box.

Sorry for the confusion...

Mark W.
Drop Ship and One Time Shipto are different features both new to E9
One time shipto allows on a Sales Order to enter on a new tab a shipto
that is to be used only for this particular sales order. With this
there is not longer a need to add a customer shipto for one time use.

Drop Ship is also a new feature, it is a special case of the new Buy
Direct feature, there are new checkboxes for each on each Sales Order
Release. The Buy Direct links the Sales Order with the purchase order.
When you enter the Purchase Order line, rather than entering the Part
Number, you enter the Sales Order Number and line, the entry screen
automatically fills in the Part Number and Quantity from the Sales Order
and writes the PO number back to the Sales Order Release. When you look
at timephase you see the order is "direct". These are received into
inventory just like regular inventory.

Drop Ship Order Lines are processed like Buy Direct, except when you
print the PO it indicates to ship the line to the shipto from the sales
order (this could be a one time shipto). Receiving these are different.
There is a new function call Drop Ship Entry, this is a combination of
Receipt Entry and Customer Shipment Entry. You enter the PO number and
packing slip and you receive/ship each line. These never go into
inventory, this creates 2 new transaction types PUR-DRP AND DRP-CUS. To
bill the customer, you go into AR Invoice Entry, Get Shipments and there
is a new button to get Drop Ships. This works good except if you want
to add an extra charge for freight it would be logical to enter this in
Drop Ship Entry, but you can't, you have to add the extra charge in AR
Invoice Entry.

I've been working on E9 for about 6 weeks now including Service Connect, Info Worker, Portal, Insite Manifest running on SQL2005.Â
Â
Financial controls and how they work are much different that 8.0 including the ability to have multiple books, multiple chart of accounts, source accounts and natural accounts, and mostly control codes that can be somewhat dizzying to most people until you get your arms around it. You can also have dynamic segments to your account structure which automatically will link certain defined business objects (i.e. projects, orders, customers)
Â
If anyone has specific questions I'd be glad to try and address

I've been somewhat skeptical of some of the fanciness added to the COA. Do you really need to build that much intelligence into your bucketing system? Does this solve real problems for folks?

I've been working on E9 for about 6 weeks now including Service Connect, Info Worker, Portal, Insite Manifest running on SQL2005.Â
Â
Financial controls and how they work are much different that 8.0 including the ability to have multiple books, multiple chart of accounts, source accounts and natural accounts, and mostly control codes that can be somewhat dizzying to most people until you get your arms around it. You can also have dynamic segments to your account structure which automatically will link certain defined business objects (i.e. projects, orders, customers)
I think for a lot of companies it would have been nice to offer some of the financial upgrades as part of an Advanced Financials Module. For a lot of small to medium sized companies I'm guessing that multiple books and multi chart of accounts is not going to be needed. Additional segments beyond account-div-dept are nice but there is a price to pay for that. I think a lot of people going to E9 will miss the ability to simply stick a GL account on a supplier, part, etc instead of having to come up with unique control codes which then can reference a specific GL account. Once you get it setup and working you get used to it like anything else but it is different from Vantage

I've been somewhat skeptical of some of the fanciness added to the COA. Do you really need to build that much intelligence into your bucketing system? Does this solve real problems for folks?

I know with the Posting Rules Engine you get V8 behavior out of the box. Can you get V8 GL out of the box and adopt the extra functionality if you want it?

You get the posting rules but you still need to set up control codes for each Transaction Type. As an example, there is a Transaction Type called AP. Once you define a unique control code for that Type you apply the Gl accounts and their journals, just like you used to do in Vantage on the company maintenance (sounds like it wa so long ago!) So yes you get the rules but setting up the GL accounts using types and control codes is the way it is done now

I'm with you. I hope not to bruise any egos but most small (and even some medium) manufacturers could survive just fine on QuickBooks Pro if needed (and at 1/10th the cost).

What does v9 have NOW that is value added? - Value that our customers would feel the positive impact of and be willing to 'pay for' (in our product prices) to cover the additional cost & disruption of upgrading??? -
Or, how specifically will v9 (relative to v8) help us REDUCE costs to offset the disruption & expense of an upgrade - and make us more long term competitive and profitable?

Frankly, from what I've heard from others of 6.1, I think that is a valid question to ask when considering even a 6.1 to 8.03 upgrade.

What are we really getting of value? (Usually simpler IS better as long as it is scaleable and can handle business growth).

One of the plusses about using an identifier, rather than an account
number is that it will be easier to remember. Plus if the control rests
with the accounting person, there is a lesser likelihood of error.
Whether it be a small to medium operation or major corporation, making
it easier on the data entry person is the key. Purchasing and Sales are
the likely people creating Customers and Suppliers. If they remember
Sales, Tooling, Raw Materials or Shop supplies rather than 10-10-6005,
it makes it easier for them.

When I was first introduced to the idea in Minneapolis, I kinda had the
same thought that the posting engines and the added codes/master files
would be a pain for the small to medium manufacturer. Vantage's target
audience is not the small manufacturer any more. While not given up on
the Vista market entirely, nobody in sales is making them the bread and
butter either. I have also found that in many cases, the software needs
to be even more malleable for them than some of the big folk. When
looking at the financials, this is a step in the right direction.

Hi,

I agree that most small manufacturers don't require the new financials. But I think the financials have been weak in vantage.
Things like not having a 13th period and further cost buckets make life easier. Also things like reversing certain trans is useful.
Putting Invoices out for approval, It does it in system and financials mirror what is going on.

I don't know how the routing engine works but it could be a real plus for us. But we are not a typical vantage user. Perphaps someone could provide some more details on the routing engine. For example we hold parts which could be used in production or spares. Financially they need to be treated differently, in our environment. So If you have part A then depending on the location/status, I am hoping, then
the financials could match this. E.g. When part a is in production stock it is in stock gl and when it is in spares it is in the spares GL. I am hoping that the STK-STK in combination with the routing engine would do this. Also in terms of project accounting this could be a big plus.

Again, I think I am hoping it does this sort of thing but don't know.

But also I would hope at some stage epicor addresses the things which are either overcomplicated such as the whole inspection routines, which seems never to get addressed, or to improve things such as the po approval process. These are functions which are probably not eye catching in the sales demo but would make a difference in live .

Bryan, I have not tested it yet but the dynamic segments listed to a business object are behind the logic that you are looking for below
Â
As for the posts regarding control codes versus account codes, training and the level of knowledge users have, whether they work at a large or small company is of course key. Like I mentioned before, these concepts were all new to us sometime in the past so a year from now for those that have worked with it will wonder how they got along without it!
