{Disarmed} Suggestions for manufactured stock

I know what you're saying. I come from a MRP/MRPII/FLOW background and with Flow we did virtually all of the supply & demand for manufactured parts with kan-bans and about 50% of purchased items as well. It was a beautiful thing.
The company I am with now is relatively young and culturally, I think running without MRP may actually be beneficial to some of the less experienced people as they will get to do a lot of the "thinking" themselves and will have a better understanding of what MRP is doing when and if we get it. (Trying to see the cup half full)

It should be a seemless transition to add it. Just make sure your planning triggers are reasonable.

Beware though... MRP is fundamentally flawed paradigm (and Vantage's is a weak implementation of MRP). Ask GM/Ford/Chrysler how well MRP II works and then look at Toyota.

Do your internal processes lend themselves to KanBan? (I've yet to work in an industry where this isn't at least somewhat true.)

If so, that is the way to go.

The hard part is being proactive (but really no harder than adjusting Mins/Safeties over time - just a more physical process as you have to get out of your chair and DO IT on the floor - adjusting how many bins are in each KanBan to match changing conditions).

It's a mental shift challenge more than anything. (Simpler IS better.)

Thanks Rob,
That's what I thought.
I think I'll be able to write a BAQ that will serve my purpose.

What are your thoughts on introducing the MRP module after we've been
live in Vista for a period of time without it? I doubt it would be
100% seamless, but for the most part, all of the basic info is
already present and I would think it's almost a matter of just
turning it on.

Does anyone know of a way to generate suggestions for stocked
manufactured items? The min-max levels create an exception message in
Time Phase inquiry, but nothing shows up in the Planning Workbench.
In fact, I can't find anything built-in that will signal planners
that a part is below or soon-to-be below minimum stock levels. I have
stocked manufactured parts as finished goods and sub-assemblies and
it seems no demand for either triggers any kind of a suggestion.
This is especially scary for the stocked finished goods since the
lead times for some of the parts can be quite long.

We are running Vista 8.03.403D without the MRP module. :(

Please tell me I missed something simple on a setup screen, but I'm
guessing I'll need to write a BAQ to do this. I've searched the forum
for related info and it looks like MRP may not even generate
suggestions for manufactured stock items.

Great forum by the way, I've learned a lot about Vista from all of
you over the last few months.

You need MRP to create the unfirmed jobs that are your defacto suggestions.
