Digest Number 3739

Each job has to be done in *perfect* order and leaves no room for error.
If one thing is out of sequence or you have to adjust a quantity along
the way - good luck! We are learning. Do not change the job quantity
after you've started manufacturing on it either. You'll create more
headaches.

Of course we do not live in a *perfect* world so we are seeing variances
that shouldn't be variances constantly.

I think I would be more inclined to say it's the shipment of product
against the job and lagging job transactions causing the problem.
especially since the COS/WIP capture will create a variance whether the
job is closed or not under certain conditions.

Hi,

We're on Vantage 6.10. Running the COS/WIP Capture causes a large number
of MFG-VAR entries to occur. These items clear through the variance
account & are a big problem for us since we do not use standard costing.
Epicor advises us that this problem is caused by a mismatch in timing
between closing of the sales order and the related jobs.

Do you agree with this assessment?

How do you ensure in your organizations that the sales orders and the
related jobs get closed within a reasonable time period?

Thanks

What application are you attempting to open this table in?

Read Uncommitted is the Default Isolation level that support instructs
us to use. It allows you to read but not write to the DB.
It prevents locking errors.

If you changed the setting but did not leave and re-enter your
application the change would probably not take effect.

I haven't used it in anger for a bit. Didn't use the MRP at all,
there wasn't really an issue with material requirements being
automatically suggested/calculated. Probably, should have made that
clearer.

Ben,

Additional follow-up I found this a few days ago on the Progress Website
it might be helpful for you, again it was not what caused my problem

* Getting error (7587) when updating a record from an Application
via ODBC.
* Syntax error (7587).
* ERROR[42000][MERANT][ODBC PROGRESS driver][PROGRESS] syntax
error (7587).

Cause:
The name of the table owner as well as the name of the actual table are
being specified within the SET clause in the UPDATE command. There is no
need to specify that information. e.g.:

UPDATE pub.Customer SET pub.Customer.name = 'Progress Software' WHERE
pub.Customer.CustNum = 1

Fixes:
Take the name of the table owner as well as the name of the actual table
out of the SET clause within the UPDATE command. e.g.:

UPDATE pub.Customer SET name = 'Progress Software' WHERE
Customer.CustNum = 1

Ben,

What is the full error message?

I have been seeing failed to open row set details:42000 Merant odbc
Progress driver [Progress] syntax error 7587. I too applied the
uncommitted suggestion without any luck.

My situation is I have both Crystal 8.5 and Crystal 9.0 on my client. I
recall having to roll back some dll's after installing 9.0 in order get
canned Vantage reports to work. I also have Crystal 9.0 installed on my
server to support eportal lite, a report application server (a watered
down Crystal Enterprise application). Opening the same report on my
server does not produce the error. both DSN are configured the same I
concluded that it must be a dll issue on my client.

Hope this helps.

I switched it over to read uncommitted and no luck. Syntax Error 7587.
Any other ideas? It would be most appreciated...

Open your ODBC Data Source Administrator, select the Vantage ODBC driver
(Most probably identified as MERANT 3.60 32-BIT Progress SQL92 if you're
using progress DB). Then click on the configure button, select the
"Advanced" tab and change the "Default Isolation Level" to "Read
Uncommitted"
You might also want to increase the "Fetch Array Size" while your in
that screen as well.
I know certain users like to use various size fetch arrays, but you'll
find out what works best for you...

The PartTran is almost always being accessed by a number of programs.
I found that as long as I'm in the "read uncommitted" mode with my ODBC
it won't fail me.

I am trying to access the PartTran table using ODBC and I am getting a
syntax error 7587.

Has anyone ever encountered this? This is the only table that gives me
this error.

click Cancel out of the prompt and Help still works but it is

Is there anyway to stop Help from looking like it is accessing the

If you plan on implementing after imaging, you will want three mirrored
drives.

Otherwise you can get away with two.

One array for your OS and VM file, the other for your Progress Bi files.

My HP server is no longer supported under maintenance by HP. We were
considering going to 8.0 some time next year so now I am in the hunt for
a
new server. What are the real specs for 15 users, 8 data collection
users
and a 1.4 gig database? We also have CorVu and advanced shipping on
this
server.

Your comments would be appreciated.

Subject: indirect labor codes

Can someone clarify for me how the indirect labor entered through the
labor
entry function works if one does not have or use the payroll module? I
am
hoping that it allow the aggregation of all this "indirect time" (ie.
repair/maintenance/cleaning/etc) into a GL account so that such amounts
can
be tracked and processed as OH or maintenance costs? In the
alternative,
can anyone provide a better method through Vantage of tracking such
miscellaneous time that is not attributable to a "job".

Thanks for any help.

Subject: Inventory Average-Cost

I have uncovered something potentially very dangerous. The average cost
can be way off if you delete a receipt.

Steps to reproduce:

Had 100 pieces @ 1.00 on hand.

Placed PO for 1000 pcs at $2.00.

Received 1,000,000 pcs on accident sending the average cost to 1.999

Deleted the receipt bringing on-hand qty back to 100 yet the average is
still 1.999.

Can someone shed light on this? It could mean that average costing is
not the way to go...

Thanks,

Ben

Subject: RE: Syntax Error 7587

Okay. I found that using Microsoft query, the only way I could
successfully query the PartTran table was to open a new query, edit it
in Microsoft query, turn of the "Auto Query" function, add the PartTran
table, then select the columns you want to retrieve and add specific
criteria to limit the dataset that's returned.

For example (I just did this now to prove it out...)
SELECT DISTINCT PartTran_0.TranType, PartTran_0.PartNum,
PartTran_0.TranQty, PartTran_0.PartDescription
FROM PUB.PartTran PartTran_0
WHERE (PartTran_0.TranDate Between ? And ?) AND (PartTran_0.TranType
Like ?)

Then I input "3/1/06 & 3/14/06" for the date range and "adj-qty" for the
transaction type.

This is the only way I know to get around that error.

Good luck!

* Getting error (7587) when updating a record from an Application
via ODBC.
* Syntax error (7587).
* ERROR[42000][MERANT][ODBC PROGRESS driver][PROGRESS] syntax
error (7587).

Cause:
The name of the table owner as well as the name of the actual table are
being specified within the SET clause in the UPDATE command. There is no
need to specify that information. e.g.:

UPDATE pub.Customer SET pub.Customer.name = 'Progress Software' WHERE
pub.Customer.CustNum = 1

Fixes:
Take the name of the table owner as well as the name of the actual table
out of the SET clause within the UPDATE command. e.g.:

UPDATE pub.Customer SET name = 'Progress Software' WHERE
Customer.CustNum = 1

Has anyone ever encountered this? This is the only table that gives me
this error.

Thanks!

We have the content filter set up in Windows XP pointing to a
noaccess.rat (ratings) file to keep some people from accessing the
Internet. When these user try to use Vantage Help, they constantly
prompted by the filter for the password to access the site. They can
click Cancel out of the prompt and Help still works but it is
annoying.

Is there anyway to stop Help from looking like it is accessing the
Internet? Or is there some general, catch-all, exception I can put in

If you plan on implementing after imaging, you will want three mirrored

Otherwise you can get away with two.

My HP server is no longer supported under maintenance by HP. We were

Subject: RE: Syntax Error 7587

Okay. I found that using Microsoft query, the only way I could
successfully query the PartTran table was to open a new query, edit it
in Microsoft query, turn of the "Auto Query" function, add the PartTran
table, then select the columns you want to retrieve and add specific
criteria to limit the dataset that's returned.

For example (I just did this now to prove it out...)
SELECT DISTINCT PartTran_0.TranType, PartTran_0.PartNum,
PartTran_0.TranQty, PartTran_0.PartDescription
FROM PUB.PartTran PartTran_0
WHERE (PartTran_0.TranDate Between ? And ?) AND (PartTran_0.TranType
Like ?)

Then I input "3/1/06 & 3/14/06" for the date range and "adj-qty" for the
transaction type.

This is the only way I know to get around that error.

Good luck!

I think I would be more inclined to say it's the shipment of product against the job and lagging job transactions causing the problem. especially since the COS/WIP capture will create a variance whether the job is closed or not under certain conditions.

* Getting error (7587) when updating a record from an Application
via ODBC.
* Syntax error (7587).
* ERROR[42000][MERANT][ODBC PROGRESS driver][PROGRESS] syntax
error (7587).

Cause:
The name of the table owner as well as the name of the actual table are
being specified within the SET clause in the UPDATE command. There is no
need to specify that information. e.g.:

UPDATE pub.Customer SET pub.Customer.name = 'Progress Software' WHERE
pub.Customer.CustNum = 1

Fixes:
Take the name of the table owner as well as the name of the actual table
out of the SET clause within the UPDATE command. e.g.:

UPDATE pub.Customer SET name = 'Progress Software' WHERE
Customer.CustNum = 1

This is the only table that gives me
this error.

We have the content filter set up in Windows XP pointing to a

click Cancel out of the prompt and Help still works but it is

Is there anyway to stop Help from looking like it is accessing the

Otherwise you can get away with two.

Subject: Inventory Average-Cost

I have uncovered something potentially very dangerous. The average cost
can be way off if you delete a receipt.

Steps to reproduce:

Had 100 pieces @ 1.00 on hand.

Placed PO for 1000 pcs at $2.00.

Received 1,000,000 pcs on accident sending the average cost to 1.999

Deleted the receipt bringing on-hand qty back to 100 yet the average is
still 1.999.

Can someone shed light on this? It could mean that average costing is
not the way to go...

Thanks,

Ben

Subject: RE: Syntax Error 7587

Okay. I found that using Microsoft query, the only way I could
successfully query the PartTran table was to open a new query, edit it
in Microsoft query, turn of the "Auto Query" function, add the PartTran
table, then select the columns you want to retrieve and add specific
criteria to limit the dataset that's returned.

For example (I just did this now to prove it out...)
SELECT DISTINCT PartTran_0.TranType, PartTran_0.PartNum,
PartTran_0.TranQty, PartTran_0.PartDescription
FROM PUB.PartTran PartTran_0
WHERE (PartTran_0.TranDate Between ? And ?) AND (PartTran_0.TranType
Like ?)

Then I input "3/1/06 & 3/14/06" for the date range and "adj-qty" for the
transaction type.

This is the only way I know to get around that error.

Good luck!
