I am not positive, but thing this is largely a result of changing to
UTF-8.

Subject: [Vantage] Database Size Growth from Vantage 6 to Epicor 9
Hello,
We are undergoing a data conversion currently between Vantage 6.1 to
Epicor 905.600 and have found our db has more than doubled in size. The
following are our statistics:
Growth
Vantage 6.1 = 3.2GB
Conversion to Epicor 803 = 3.7GB
Conversion to 904_after schema change = 4GB
Conversion to 904_ after Unit of Measure and other automatic conversions
= 6GB
Conversion to 904 after manual conversions (mainly GL transaction
history conversion) = 8.2GB
Still unknown is the conversion to 905 as I have not yet completed this.
Has anyone else come across such a large db size growth?
We are running a Progress backend.
Thank You
J Seeman
