Database down

I believe there is an unload/re-load type process that decomposes the tables into files and then loads them into a new database. With most DB's this is the traditional way to "compress" and restructure them. If I recall from doing it once (in the 4.0 to 5.0 upgrade?) it can take a fair bit of time. (days?) for large databases. Also, there is not much "deleting" available in Vantage, anything with a reference to it tends to stay there forever. But reloading could make thing run a bit faster.

For any of you still on 3.0 or 4.0, I just confirmed that those Vantage
versions using Progress prior to 9.1c will not allow file sizes of over 2.0
GB.

Now my next question. I will have time to upgrade (sooner than later) but
are progress db's like Exchange DB, once expanded they stay that size?
Will they shrink if non-used data is deleted? Can they be compressed, or
reduced?

TIA.

Cliff,
Thanks. From the looks of an earlier post, it looks like I had better rush
up my upgrade to 6.1 and 8.0. From what I just read in another post, 4.0
will not allow db files over 2.0 GB. If I understand that post correctly,
releases prior to 9.1C will not go above 2.0 GB. I guess it is good I got
an early warning!

I would guess you have reached the 2 GB db file size limitation. I
cannot advise on extending it. Maybe someone else can. Otherwise you
should stay on hold with support until you get someone.

What is the file size limit for W2K Server using NTFS, it's way above 2 GB,
correct?
That's what I have and was wondering? Still on Vantage 4.0 also, in case
that matters.
I just want to head off the same problem if I'm close to the limit. I'm at
1.5 GB now.

Thanks,
Jim Moore

I do not think it is a os limitation it is a setting in progress that limits
to 2gb then you run a utility to increase over that limit.

What is the file size limit for W2K Server using NTFS, it's way above 2 GB,
correct? That's what I have and was wondering? Still on Vantage 4.0 also, in
case that matters. I just want to head off the same problem if I'm close to
the limit. I'm at 1.5 GB now.

Thanks,
Jim Moore

Seems the database reaching OS's file size limitation.
Did you extend your database?

Jim
I on W2K Vantage 6.0 - my database is 4.7 GB. Not an OS problem.
