Thomas,

Build up your confidence on doing reindexing and performing a dump and load
by setting up a test server or even a test server and client separate from
your network. You can use a couple of old PC's. Your times will be slower
but the training and experience will be well worth it. I have done this on
every upgrade from Vantage 2.5 to 8.0. I create my own Master List of step
by step instructions or screen dumps to supplement epicors documents on
doing these tasks. This process has proven it's self to be a value on every
release. I would never do a upgrade, reindex, dump & Load with out a trial
run first.

Yeah what he said! I have the Dump and Reload kit from Epicor, but it has
more disclaimers that the M$ EULA.

FEAR is the key word here.

What about re-indexing?

Or is that the same as dump & load. I've never done it/either due to time
limits, fear, lack of experience and did I mention fear.

Speed improvements from a dump & load or any other defrag method for that
matter are going to be negligible unless you happen to have a very low
cache
hit ratio.

I' ve done dump & reload several times after corruption and repair issues.
It takes awhile (for our 1.4GB DB). First rule....multiple backups on a
variety of media. I also vaguely recall a dump & reload somewhere in the
4.0 to 5.2 upgrade path due to some heavy duty schema changes. It's one
of
those nail-biter processes where it runs and runs and you are never sure
if
it is really getting anywhere except for occasional messages. I never
really noticed any performance improvement but then I was more interested
in
the DB running again at all.

For drive fragmentation I think touching the Progress DB (running or
not)
would be very dangerous. But perhaps Tech Support could advise about
doing
this in between the dump and the reload with something like Raxco or
Diskeeper. As long as you are going part way it might be a good chance to
re-org the physical drive along the way - unless TS thinks it too risky.
Perhaps having the DB physically contiguous (for awhile) could be a speed
benefit. Or maybe Prorest is smart enough about grabbing contiguous free
space and you could accomplish that with that method (although that method
won't address DB internal optimization so you really might need both or
all
three - dump/reload + Backup/Restore with physical defrag in between).

If anyone has solid performance info on any of this please post.

Also.....does the movement of data to 8.0 amount to a dump/reload? If so
I
will wait for that and since it will be on a virgin system the physical
drive issue should be good too.

I' ve done dump & reload several times after corruption and repair issues. It takes awhile (for our 1.4GB DB). First rule....multiple backups on a variety of media. I also vaguely recall a dump & reload somewhere in the 4.0 to 5.2 upgrade path due to some heavy duty schema changes. It's one of those nail-biter processes where it runs and runs and you are never sure if it is really getting anywhere except for occasional messages. I never really noticed any performance improvement but then I was more interested in the DB running again at all.

For drive fragmentation I think touching the Progress DB (running or not) would be very dangerous. But perhaps Tech Support could advise about doing this in between the dump and the reload with something like Raxco or Diskeeper. As long as you are going part way it might be a good chance to re-org the physical drive along the way - unless TS thinks it too risky. Perhaps having the DB physically contiguous (for awhile) could be a speed benefit. Or maybe Prorest is smart enough about grabbing contiguous free space and you could accomplish that with that method (although that method won't address DB internal optimization so you really might need both or all three - dump/reload + Backup/Restore with physical defrag in between).

If anyone has solid performance info on any of this please post.

Also.....does the movement of data to 8.0 amount to a dump/reload? If so I will wait for that and since it will be on a virgin system the physical drive issue should be good too.

What about re-indexing?

Or is that the same as dump & load. I've never done it/either due to time
limits, fear, lack of experience and did I mention fear.

Subject: RE: [Vantage] Database defragmentation

I' ve done dump & reload several times after corruption and repair
issues.
It takes awhile (for our 1.4GB DB). First rule....multiple backups on
a
variety of media. I also vaguely recall a dump & reload somewhere in
the
4.0 to 5.2 upgrade path due to some heavy duty schema changes. It's
one
of
those nail-biter processes where it runs and runs and you are never
sure
if
it is really getting anywhere except for occasional messages. I never
really noticed any performance improvement but then I was more
interested
in
the DB running again at all.

For drive fragmentation I think touching the Progress DB (running or
not)
would be very dangerous. But perhaps Tech Support could advise about
doing
this in between the dump and the reload with something like Raxco or
Diskeeper. As long as you are going part way it might be a good
chance to
re-org the physical drive along the way - unless TS thinks it too
risky.
Perhaps having the DB physically contiguous (for awhile) could be a
speed
benefit. Or maybe Prorest is smart enough about grabbing contiguous
free
space and you could accomplish that with that method (although that
method
won't address DB internal optimization so you really might need both
or
all
three - dump/reload + Backup/Restore with physical defrag in between).

If anyone has solid performance info on any of this please post.

Also.....does the movement of data to 8.0 amount to a dump/reload? If
so
I
will wait for that and since it will be on a virgin system the
physical
drive issue should be good too.

There are really two parts of the defragmentation. The big honkin'
DB file (or files), and the data within them. You can shutdown the
database, then use a utility like Disk Keeper to defrag the file at
the file system level. But its internal contents may still be
scattered, which is where the dump & load comes in.

Ideally, you'd need to Dump & Load, then do the operating system /
file system level defrag. As Barry mentioned, Progress' caching
alleviates most of the performance hit of fragmentation or slow disk
drives. Since you can buy enough RAM to cache the vast majority of a
typical Vantage DB for pocket change these days, IO optimization may
not be worth worrying about.

Sorry Todd, moving to 8.0 does not include a dump and load.

It's one of
those nail-biter processes where it runs and runs and you are never sure if
it is really getting anywhere except for occasional messages. I never
really noticed any performance improvement but then I was more interested in
the DB running again at all.

For drive fragmentation I think touching the Progress DB (running or not)
would be very dangerous. But perhaps Tech Support could advise about doing
this in between the dump and the reload with something like Raxco or
Diskeeper. As long as you are going part way it might be a good chance to
re-org the physical drive along the way - unless TS thinks it too risky.
Perhaps having the DB physically contiguous (for awhile) could be a speed
benefit. Or maybe Prorest is smart enough about grabbing contiguous free
space and you could accomplish that with that method (although that method
won't address DB internal optimization so you really might need both or all
three - dump/reload + Backup/Restore with physical defrag in between).

If anyone has solid performance info on any of this please post.

Also.....does the movement of data to 8.0 amount to a dump/reload? If so I
will wait for that and since it will be on a virgin system the physical
drive issue should be good too.

This process has proven it's self to be a value on every
release. I would never do a upgrade, reindex, dump & Load with out a trial
run first.

What about re-indexing?

Or is that the same as dump & load. I've never done it/either due to time
limits, fear, lack of experience and did I mention fear.

Speed improvements from a dump & load or any other defrag method for that
matter are going to be negligible unless you happen to have a very low
cache
hit ratio.

Hello Thomas,

why do you want to do it? Is your db so big, that you assume you need a
defragmentation?
In general the progress databases are very stable and fast, so a
defragmentation (with dump and load) is not neccesary.
How big is your database?
How many entries are in your biggest table (parts, quotes...???)?
Do you have special performance problems with certain data?

We are working with Vantage for only 1 1/2 years now, but more then 15
years with progress! Dump and load is normally not necessary, but maybe
you did special things...

Regards
Reinhard
