Data Collection

The use of Wyse Winterms (or similar) is the best opition IMO.
No moving parts = very low failure rate. Which is important
if you have a lot of stations.

Joe,
Can you give me some idea of the cost of the Wyse terminals and where you
buy them? Their web site isn't very forthcoming with info.
TIA.

They are around $600-$700 each. I got a distributor name from
Wyse. Call them or look on their web site. I used to use
old pc's but they are way too much trouble. Winterms require
no configuration, no drivers, no software to load. Just turn
them on. In the event that one did die you just plug a new one in.

We have just moved to Vantage version 4 and are still putting out fires, they have calmed quite a bit, but now I have a new problem. Yesterday I had two employees go to end activity and clock out and received a message " record already in use" I checked and nobody had their ID pulled on on any other DC screen, but sill I have the error. I checked ERANET and it just says if you cant find the workstation with the person pulled up in data collection you have to shutdown the database and start it back up. Have any of you seen this problem? And is there an easy solution?

Thanks

This can happen if workstation crashes while they are in a Data Collection
screen. There is a utility to fix it called endact.r which avoids shutdown.
Call Tech Support and have them email it to you. I don't think it is posted
anywhere for download.

Paul,

We have seen this problem from time to time, and we have found that if the
user goes back to the workstation on which they started the activity, it
usually lets them end it. Not very scientific, but we have found it to work
most of the time. When it doesn't, we shutdown and restart that night, and
let the supervisor adjust the user's times the next day. We always shut the
server down, instead of just the database. It makes NT happy.

We have this happen almost daily at our other plant that connects over
terminal server. I just go into PROMON and disconnect that station (or
sometimes both) instead of having to shutdown the database. (Each of our
data collection stations has a separate login so we can easily identify it
in PROMON.)

I have encounter this often. If a workstation crashes, then this can
happen. I find out which workstation the person was using. Then use
Promon to disconnect that workstation.

Also, concerning Terminal Server, Sometimes you have to reset the client
from TS because the client comes back into a locked session. If you clear
both, you will take care of the problem completely until the next time they
crash or get bumped out of Vantage.

Option 1. If you have the source code you could change this.

Option 2. Use a windows macro product such as Ground Control. When you want
to open this window execute the macro instead to open the window and change
whatever default settings you like.

In version 5.0 you can change the SORT BY default but not the JOB STATUS. I
would hope they add this along with others in the future. Like PO Browse to
default to the User in the BUYER select? Both would be a good suggestion for
version 6.0

Goodmorning Vantage Users,

Just curious if anyone has solutions to somehow change the default job
status
filter for clocking into production. It currently defaults to "open'" and
shows a listing off all jobs to possible have labor clock into when I would
like it to default to "released." From what Epicor says this can not be
changed, I just had to see if any users are as frustrated as I am and
possible have alternatives to this ?

Thank You,

Thank you to those who responded to my third database question. I have
another for the group....data collection. We are currently using time cards
and labor entry, but are looking into changing to shop floor data
collection. What I would like to know from you who are using it is:

What equipment do you use and have you tried
What issues came up with implementation
Any helpful hints or things to watch for

If there is someone in the group that would not mind, I would be glad to
speak one on one about this issue. TIA (again)

We have been using data collection for about two years. Use touchscreens with old 200mhz PC's as timeclocks. We had custom programming to modify the screen to be similar to what we had used before (KRONOS system) and to change the order of questions to make them more simple. The biggest source of error for timekeeping is have a screen that confuses computer iliterate users.

Incidently, as we move to cell manufacturing, we are doing away with the timeclocks and going to paper, so in the very near future we won't be using data collection nearly as much. Vantage 5.1 significantly changes the timekeeping screens, by the way. We are still on 5.0.

We are in the process of integrating data collection stations onto the shop
floor. We have purchased a touch screen solution encased in protection
cabinets. My question to the group is how do we set up data collection users
without exhausting a user license, and is there a way to launch the data
collection module automatically?
What I am mainly looking for is a logical thought process on how to handle
security. Any help would be appreciated.

Pablo Garza
We have found that setting up tweakui on the touch screens lets us lock
everything down on the Data Collection PC's. We then put the Data
Collection.vtg/Plant Floor.vtg in the startup group of Windows. When the
system is powered on, automatically logs on to our network (done with
tweakui) and then starts the Data Collections screen. In the data
collection.vtg file we added the line vantagelogin=username/password so that
it logs into Data Collections automatically. We also disabled all access to
anything else with tweakui and removed all desktop icons.

We have started using Terminal Services with a Flat Paneled Touch Screen all
in one thin client that we plan on replacing all of our current units with.
Its working very well.

Instead of launching the standard Vantage.vtg, use the
Data Collection.vtg. This won't use a full license.
(It also assumes you purchased Data Collection User
licenses from Epicor) A Data Collection user has
limited access to Vantage regardless of the Login ID.
That should help out on your security issue. We also
use a product called WinLock Pro that will also lock
the users out of workstation functions and once
configured properly pretty much shuts them out of
anything other than Vantage and reboot the PC.

With NT4.0 I use the system policy editor to lock down the desktop and disable the shutdown feature. This keeps people from exiting and waiting for restarting.
We are in the process of rolling out our data collection stations onto the

there any reports available that show our dayshift supervisors what jobs

I have a problem with my Data Collection. Before a few month, I was
Vantage 5.0, and my data collection work with a VTG Data Collection.
With the new version Vantage 5.2, VTG Data Collection, it's not
appear. Is replaced by Plant Floor. The interface is not the same
thing. It's not good for me. Presenthly a open my data collection
with the licence vantage and not the licence Data Collection.

Do you have a solution for me ?

Nancy,

Plant floor is the data collection - go into edit on the plant floor.vtg
file and make sure it says Vantagedatacollectionuser=yes and it shouldn't
use a full license. Make sure your desktop shortcuts are pointing to this
file. They still appear to be a user if you are looking in promon, but they
are not. Hope this helps....God Bless
