What Wyse model are you using with the touchscreen monitors?

Thanks,

They are a cost effective alternative to desktops. Very secure.

For the monitor, we use a touch screen interface from ELO Touch.

As far as scanners go, there is an industrial grade model we use from
System ID. Fairly bullet proof.

Is anyone using the data collection module to collect shop floor
labor? If so, what kind of hardware are you utilizing for yuor data
collection units? Is anyone using any handheld models, touchscreens?

Thanks in Advance!

Hey Group,

We recently purchased the AMM module several DC licenses. Our IT department
has 25+ older PC's (ranging from a straight Pentium machine to a PII 500)
sitting unused. What type of hardware (PC's and bar coding equipment) is
everyone using? I'm calling Vantage for the recommended specs, but I have a
feeling they might suggest a more powerful machine than really necessary.

Please let me know!

I have 12 DC stations running via Progress client or Citrix. All are
Pentium 200 48MB ram with 10/100 NICs. The NIC is important. They are all
running Win 2K.

V4.0 ... Data collection running on about 15 P-133's with 128 meg of RAM.

Takes about 10 minutes to boot the PC ... Another 15 minutes to load Vantage
... After that the program just FLIES ....

Ok, maybe that's being a bit kind. Let's say that if you pay your
operators next to nothing then you won't mind them standing at the D/C
terminals growing old.

On the other hand, if I had PC's with P300 / 256 ram or better for D/C I'd
think I was in heaven!

We are currently at 5.1 and do not use data collection. We are going to
6.1 in April and at that time would like to change from our present
Kronos Timekeeper time clock to using Vantage to track attendance.
Employees are expected to clock in upon starting, out and back in at
lunch and at the end of the work day. We need to have equipment located
in two locations in our building for this and already know we cannot
control a buzzer with Vantage. We are interested in what
recommendations there are for wedge scanners vs. touch screens. If you
use a wedge scanner, what do you use to encode the cards?
If this works, down the road we might consider using bar code for
smaller inventory items such as cutters. We aren't sure if we should go
ahead now and get the equipment to do attendance and inventory or just
see how the attendance tracking goes and purchase new equipment for
inventory at a later date.

Who says you can't control your shop buzzer with Vantage? We do. Simple sound card in Vantage server patched to paging input on phone system. At scheduled times a .wav file is played for 3 seconds.

For DC equipment we started with very cheap (sub $400 then) stripped down PCs. Now shop is final working places for old office PCs as new ones are brought in. No CD drive, disabled floppy drive and locked down BIOS. Each PC as a WelchAllyn ImageTeam 3800 scanner in-line with the keyboard. Having real-time clocking data is very benficial as opposed to batch updates to Vantage at the end of the day. Also, it handles lunch start-stop times automatically so no clocking needed then.

Our Epicor sales rep wrote when I asked him about getting hardware for
this that he didn't know of anything Vantage related that would
integrate with a buzzer.

Even manual time card entry can do lunches automatically, but do you
just trust that everyone arrives back to work on time?

Ahhh...the things "real world" users have to invent that sales people never encounter. ;) We had a problem with people arbitraging the difference betweent he buzzer and the server time. If the two clocks were a minute off in their favor shop people would leave work ahead of the buzzer. I notice yesterday it is still not perfect. Paging system has 6 second feedback delay so people stand around Data Collection PC refreshing it over and over until 3:00pm shows then quickly clock out and head for the door. Amazing how many people can clock out before the buzzer sounds 6 seconds later.

As for lunch return....that's what supervisors are for. If we needed to I could play a different tone as a warning a minute before end of lunch.

I have the atomic clock on my pc and I update our time clock daily. Now
I am told that the atomic clock is wrong. Time moves too slow for most
and too fast for me.

Thanks for your ideas.

Ahhh...the things "real world" users have to invent that sales people
never encounter. ;) We had a problem with people arbitraging the
difference betweent he buzzer and the server time. If the two clocks
were a minute off in their favor shop people would leave work ahead of
the buzzer. I notice yesterday it is still not perfect. Paging system
has 6 second feedback delay so people stand around Data Collection PC
refreshing it over and over until 3:00pm shows then quickly clock out
and head for the door. Amazing how many people can clock out before the
buzzer sounds 6 seconds later.

As for lunch return....that's what supervisors are for. If we needed to
I could play a different tone as a warning a minute before end of lunch.

Our Epicor sales rep wrote when I asked him about getting hardware for
this that he didn't know of anything Vantage related that would
integrate with a buzzer.

Even manual time card entry can do lunches automatically, but do you
just trust that everyone arrives back to work on time?

Who says you can't control your shop buzzer with Vantage? We do.
Simple sound card in Vantage server patched to paging input on phone
system. At scheduled times a .wav file is played for 3 seconds.

For DC equipment we started with very cheap (sub $400 then) stripped
down PCs. Now shop is final working places for old office PCs as new
ones are brought in. No CD drive, disabled floppy drive and locked down
BIOS. Each PC as a WelchAllyn ImageTeam 3800 scanner in-line with the
keyboard. Having real-time clocking data is very benficial as opposed
to batch updates to Vantage at the end of the day. Also, it handles
lunch start-stop times automatically so no clocking needed then.

Jeni,

We also have a buzzer that is controlled by the vantage clock. We have the
server setup to sync time with all the data collection PC's every 15 minutes
and go out on the web and sync its time - The buzzer has been right on ever
since. We also do a two minute warning bell before works starts and
before lunch ends. This way employees can not say they did not have enough
time to clock in.

As far as, lunch - even though Vantage takes care of the clocking in out at
lunch time - we still have the employees manually clock in and out. Just
becuase we have several people who leave the building at lunch. On to many
occassions they were late.

We orginally purchased touch screens for data collection but we also had a
wedge and keyboard available. The mainly used the keyboard and wedge. As
the touch screens broke we never replaced them - never heard one complaint..

I'm excited about all of the buzzer information. This is great to know.

What brand wedge scanner are you using and what was the life span of
your touch screens?

Is anyone using the data collection module to collect shop floor
labor? If so, what kind of hardware are you utilizing for yuor data
collection units? Is anyone using any handheld models, touchscreens?

Thanks in Advance!

We're using Data Collection with bar codes scanners and touchscreens.
The computers are Dell Dimensions, small ones with Celeron
processors. The touchscreens and scanners are also from Dell, as they
had the best pricing.

It works well, unless you have to do something out of the ordinary.
Which is why, at least at most units, we keep the keyboard and mouse
attached, but set aside. We've also locked down the computers very
tightly, meaning that you can only do data collection, unless you have
the administrative ID and PW.

We deployed thin client boxes a couple of years ago. They are set up
with auto authentication onto our Vantage server running TS.
They are a cost effective alternative to desktops. Very secure.

For the monitor, we use a touch screen interface from ELO Touch.

As far as scanners go, there is an industrial grade model we use from
System ID. Fairly bullet proof.

Having never used Terminal Services. Could you give me a brief outline of what is needed to set this up? I DON'T need the gory details just a rough idea of what is involved of using TS with thin clients to use MES or AMM on the shop floor.

How does the licensing work with regards to data collection users? Do you need one per thin client?
