If you are on E9, then you can use the Solution Manager to wrap up the customizations before doing a back up.

They’re not externally saved. They’re saved within the database itself. That’s why if you do a backup and restore, everything goes with you.
When you open each and every screen, it’s generated on-the-fly from the db.
