Tim, Wendy,
I have just caught up with this thread.
If I remember rightly, the field may not be displayed in the SQL
Expression Editor, which does give you the impression that it can't be
done. However, write your SQL Expression anyway, and just type the
field name into the Expression.
This is from months-old memory, but I'm pretty sure it works - and if it
saves having to chop Progress fields then all the better!

Wendy,
I never could get the SQL Expression suggestion working for the Part
Description either - even after talking with Crystal (some 8 months
ago). Thus, I had to settle on the Progress route of shortening the
field length.

Thanks Ted, Troy, and Anton. The SQL suggestion sounds great, but for
some reason the editor is not displaying the "labor note" field as an
option to add in the SQL Expression Editor. There must be some weird
characteristics about this field.......

Anton Wilson posted this some time ago and it works out great for using
these types of fields in Crystal. Use # 1
To those of you who use Crystal with ODBC, and have hit the problem of
Crystal being unable to use a field of over 255 characters (memo or blob
field) in a formula, I have discovered 2 good solutions.
1 - I discovered this today, and it was right in front of my nose all
along.
It's by far the simplest solution and I'd recommend it.
Go into the "Insert" menu in Crystal. Select "Create SQL Expression".
From
here you can either do an RTrim, or more safely, do a "{fn
SUBSTRING((field.name),1,255)}" - this ensures that the field is no
longer
than 255 characters.
From there you can include the SQL expression in formulas.
2 - The second option is to edit the length of the field in question,
directly in the Progress database.
I recommend doing a search on Epicor's ERAnet for "memo fields" or some
such
search string, to locate their instructions on this.
But for your information you will need to edit the Vantage session file
(vantage.vtg) according to those instructions and save the modified
version
as a different file.
Create yourself a shortcut (and make sure only the right person has
access
to it!) and run the program. This gets you into the database and you can
change the format of any field in Vantage.
In all honesty I'm not sure that this is necessary though. Using an SQL
Expression in Crystal is a much cleaner, safer solution.
Hope that helps!

Wendy,
Crystal can't sort or group on blob or memo fields that are over (I
think) 250 characters. Some of Vantage's text fields are 1000+
characters,
including Part Description. I don't know if this may be the case with
the
field you are using. If so, there is a way to truncate the field in your
progress database. Unfortunately, I don't remember how. Perhaps Tech
Support could give you a hand there. We did it with the Part Description
and it gave us a lot more flexibility in our Crystal reports.

Subject: [Vantage] Crystal reports sorting
Hi everyone!
I've created a Crystal report that is utilizing the labor detail table.
We maintain some die #'s in our "labor note" field. We cannot think of
any
other field where we can enter this data in right now. Well, I
desperately
need to sort on this die # for the report, but for obvious reasons the
"labor note" field is not sortable in Crystal. I noticed that the labor
detail table does not have the option for VB forms. Does anyone have an
idea of how I can sort this die # in the "labor note" field?
Thanks!
and Happy New Year!
