Crystal Reports field missing-MEMO fields

Rhonda,

It's been a while since I've had to do this, but if memory serves,
after we upgraded to the Vantage 6 and started using the ODBC driver
that comes with it, there were 2 places I needed to make a change.

One was in the Data Dictionary field properties, and the other was in
the Data Dictionary -> Options -> SQL Properties -> Adjust Field
Width.

My original instructions did not include that second step, so maybe
that is where your problem lies.

HTH,

Brian Stenglein

I'm writing a CR report using the "Part" table and with among other fields,
have inserted, the "Part Description" field. Previewing the report shows
the "part description" field data, but when I use the selection expert to
filter on "part description", the "part description" field is not available
in the "report fields" and has disappeared from the Part Table fields.

Any clues as to what's happening?

Crystal will not let you perform this function (in addition to formulas) on
what they call a "blob/memo" field.
Is this because it is "memo" type and too long for Crystal to deal with? I believe it has to be truncated somehow to an acceptable length for use in functions.

Norm,

Try doing a search on the Crystal website under Memo fields. A few years ago
I found an article where they created a SQL expression truncating lines
together from the original memo field. They then filtered on the SQL formula
field. I used it in a report at the time, but can't remember which one.

Norm,

The part description field is a "memo" field. You are unable to use
these fields in calculation (including filters).

This is one of the most annoying issues with RB going away. That and
famous "rep" field in the order header being both an "array" and a
"memo" so you can't split out the array with Crystal. If I am mistaken
on that last one, please someone let me know and know how.

My findings so far are that sorting, formulas, etc with memo fields are not
supported in CR 8.5. The search through CR Knowledge Base says "This issue
has been resolved in Crystal Reports 9".

Todd mentioned on 1/8 that CR8.5 is used with 5.2 and beyond, but is anyone
successfully using CR9?

Norm,

I still have not found my report using the SQL expression. I did find
Crystal KB C2009954 that might work for you. I have Crystal 9.0 loaded on my
test server. I have written only one report with it. I created two DBF
tables using the export utility in Vantage, and join them in CR9.0 without
getting the no primary index error message when I tried doing it in CR8.5.
Crystal 9.0 has a little different look and feel. Crystal 10.0 is either
just released, or soon to be. To my knowledge Epivor does not support
anything past 8.5

One trick I have found to work around this in Crystal 8.0 and above is
to create an SQL Expression Field like so:

{fn SUBSTRING(vantage.blobfield, 1, 255)}

and use *this* in your formulas. The 1 is the beginning character and
the 255 is the ending character. This slices up the blob field nicely.
Don't get me started on the salesrep list. Whats worse is the shop
schedule! I wrote an enhanced priority dispatch report once that was
supposed to accomodate for holidays and such. Imagine my horror when I
found that field is stored in the same manner.

Note that the blob field WILL NOT show up in the field list as you are
writing the formula...you must manually type it in. However, the
formual will check OK and work fine.

From www.dol.gov <http://www.dol.gov> ...fact sheet #23 excerpt:

The regular rate includes all remuneration for employment except certain
payments excluded by the Act itself. Payments which are not part of the
regular rate include pay for expenses incurred on the employer's behalf,
premium payments for overtime work or the true premiums paid for work on
Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, discretionary bonuses, gifts and payments
in the nature of gifts on special occasions, and payments for occasional
periods when no work is performed due to vacation, holidays, or illness.

I don't see where shift differential is not a part of their regular pay. I
don't think it fits their exemptions.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to remind you all of a solution I've mentioned a couple
of times previously on this issue.

Tech Support has instructions on changing the field size of DB
fields. You enter the Data Dictionary of your Progress DB and shrink
the field size from 1000 characters to 255 and it works great in
Crystal and Access after that.

I've used it for VB form Character fields, I've used it for the Order
Header Rep List, and various other times when I've wanted to use a
memo field in a formula or selection criteria.

Once you get the instructions its really simple to do. Only catch is
you have to be the only one in the DB when you make the change.

Really Freezing in Northern MN -32 this morning.

HTH,

Carol,

Here's what I found on the DOL site:

Night Work & Shift Work
Extra pay for working night shifts is a matter of agreement between the
employer and the employee (or the employee's representative). The Fair Labor
Standards Act (FLSA) does not require extra pay for night work. However, the
FLSA does require that covered, nonexempt workers be paid not less than time
and one-half the employee's regular rate for time worked over 40 hours in a
workweek.

According to how I read this I don't think it is required to be included.
>From what you sited below I still can't figure out what is required.

When you have the shop employee enter his own labor into Data
Collection, how do you account for someone who is running two machines
at the same time? We believe that we are being efficient and that the
total labor of 10 hours should be divided between the two jobs at 5
hours each. Since employee punches in at real time, won't it give each
job 10 hours each? 20 hours of labor, but 10 hours to payroll.

Wondering how to go live in data collection and get off the labor card
entry.

When they clock into multiple jobs, Vantage Data Collection automatically
splits the time between the jobs. The clock start/end times will be the same
but the labor hours are split.

Hi All,

We used the SQL statement workaround successfully for years. We are
upgrading from Winnt 4.0 to W2K. On the machines with W2K, crystal
(8.0) doesn't recognize the field (the one we had to type
in because it wasn't available to select) . It tells me field does
not exist!

So we are on to plan B, modifying the field size. However, the
vantage document only mentions the Character fields that may be used
for VB forms. Has anyone modified the Part Description Fields in Job
Head or Order Detail table etc?

I have lots of reports that I need to make work.... or I guess I
could rewrite them in report builder.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks,
