Crystal Reports and Progress

Swap file? What is that? I'm new to everything. I was told not to
install Crystal on to every workstation. Are you running these
reports out of Vantage itself or just out of Crystal? Epicor is
trying to help me get the compiled reports to work, they do not seem
to be working on every workstation through Vantage yet.

Thanks

Thanks to those who have helped me with attaching Crystal 8.5 to
Vantage. I am new to Vantage and Progress and that was part of the
problem.

Here is what I had to do.

1) Install the ODBC drivers on both the server an client.

2) Check to make sure that the swap file is installed on the system. If
not the server will probably lock up the first time you run a large
report.

3) Install Crystal on the workstation.

4) Run a simple report using one Vantage file, just to double check that
the software is installed and that all the ODBC links work.

5) Linking multiple Vantage files. Vantage tries to be helpful and
links files by every possible field. Great idea, doesn't work! To many
links. Each link must be a unique key between files. The simplest way
to do it is to remove all links and establish the ones you need. The
"Left Outer Join" works best for me. Make sure that the link, "one to
many" is going in the right direction; One customer to many order
headers, as an example.

Thanks again for all the help.

John,

Good to hear your getting going with Crystal, its a nice tool. A
hint to use regarding #5. If you go into File->Options->Database Tab
there is an area at the bottom labeled "Advanced Options". One of
the check boxes there is for "Auto-SmartLinking". Get rid of that
check box and you won't have to remove the links with every report.

Also, a word of caution about your statement that "Left Outer Join"
works best for me. The type of join you need to use will depend on
the type of report, the data your working with, and the results you
want to see. No one Join type is best for all reports. It takes a
little getting used to which type to use in which situation.
