Brian,
I took the 4GL essentials class that progress offers. I primarily use
Progress for report writing with some simple interface design. I do all my
reporting with Progress now. I used the manuals that we had to get started
and had a good foundation going into the class. I thought the class was
worth the time and money. I had a good instructor and I thought the class
was well laid out. I'm not sure how useful Progress will be in the long
run, as far as Vantage is concerned, but I hope that I will be able to
continue writing reports in Progress into the next versions.

Subject: [Vantage] Re: Creating Custom Modules
To all the programmers out there. I have a general question
regarding education as it pertains to creating customized
applications that involve Vantage data. I currently uses MS Access
for a lot of applications/reporting needs. I also know a little VB
and have a couple of apps in that. I am curious as to what I could
do if I learned some 4GL. I know Progress offers a 4 day 4GL
Essentials class to get people started. Has anyone taken that
class? Would I be able to use that language effectively without
having to purchase additional software? I remember Thad complaining
about how expensive it would be to purchase software necessary to
program in 4GL. Looking to the future, with Sonoma, I believe the
application will be written in .NET. Would that "OBSOLETE" the use
of 4GL for customizing Vantage? I would want to learn VB.Net to work
on future version of Vantage wouldn't I? I want to make sure I focus
future training into the areas that would be most effective in the
long run.
Thanks for any insight.
