Crash Protection

Ann,

Under Progress Explorer following the tree expand "localhost", then expand
"Databases". Right click "Properties" on your data base and UNCHECK
"Automatically Start this Database when the Admin Server is Started".

I don't like them starting automatically either. I also like to have TASK
Manager up when I start each database to see how much memory my production
database and training databases eat up when started.

Subject: [Vantage] Re: Crash Protection

(Testing on standalone notebook) I've done a 'Database Purge and Summarize',
twice with Crash Protection off (3 hours) and once with it on (6.5 hours).
Our db is over 4 GB.

I think if I can get the crash protection turned back on before I start the
EPIC50 db, I might have a chance. Problem is that as soon as I connect
localhost in Progress Explorer, it also starts EPIC50 db. I would like to
try to set EPIC50 db to start manually so I can turn crash protection back
on before starting it. I have to connect local host to get to the
configuration settings to make the change, then EPIC50 db starts
automatically before I can make the change.

Thank you for your repsonse. I may have to give up and leave crash
protection on, but I'm not ready to give in yet. I currently need to do a
purge, then dump and load. In the future I will be upgrading from 5.0 to
6.1, so I want to be able to turn the crash protection off if possible, just
need to know the rules.

This notebook is brand new, haven't even used it for anything else yet. I
don't want to rule out the possibility that the notebook has something to do
with the errors I am getting. My errors indicate that I am loosing the
connection to the Admin server on local host:
variety of errors last night: exception errors in the Progress application,
java.mi.ConnectIOException, java.net.NoRouteToHost, Exception:Host
unreachable, java.lang.NullPointer, com.ms.com.ComFailException. In power
settings, I set the monitor to turn off after 15 minutes, and told
everything else (hard drives
etc.) to never turn off.

The error I got in the previous attempts were: First I restored the db,
then started services, the connected localhost in Progress explorer (EPIC50
db automatically starts), turned off crash protection and reconnected in
progress exlorer. Logged into Vantage, ran db purge, it said it completed
successfully, logged out of Vantage, logged into Vantage, logged out of
Vantage, no problems. Disconnected EPIC50 and localhost, stopped admin
service, rebooted, started service, connected localhost (EPIC50 connects
automatically-crash protection was still off). At this point and everytime
I try to start EPIC50 manually I got this error: Error in database startup.
Error in startup of database localhose:20931:epic50. Message 08:57:28
Broker: This process terminated with exit code 1. (8619)

All help is appreciated.

Anyone know the overall dos and don'ts of Crash Protection? (Vantage
version 5.00.329, if it matters).

My plan is to test this on the standalone notebook first before I do
it on the server (hopefully this weekend):
1) backup db from server to backup.1 file
2) shut down Vantage on server so that nobody can log in
3) restore db on notebook

6) Considering that solves the proglem, I am additionally going to
test and perform a dump and load on the notebook over the weekend
and restore the updated db onto the NT server before Monday.
7) As I understand it, I must have crash protection turned on when
I start the EPIC50 database. After it is started, I can turn crash
protection off -- as long as I turn it back on before I start the
EPIC50 db in Progress Explorer. Is it that simple? I want to have
crash protection turned off during the dump and load (I think), but
I need to make sure I understand more about it.
