CPU Speed Comparisons - Intel P4 vs. AMD Athalon 64

We just upgraded to 800.805 and as of today Vantage workstation requirements have increased to 2.8Ghz Rec. and 1.6Ghz Min. Also the RAM min is now 1GB. I can remember when service packs help apps lower their resource requirements...LOL

Is that really correct?
2.8GHz?

That just doesn't sound right. I mean some of the most complicated 3D computer games out there only need a 1.7GHz to 2GHz.

I have run the 8.0 client on a laptop with a P2 400MHz and it has ran just fine.

I too am thinking thin clients and TS for the shop floor DC workstations - at least for 8.0. But for right now I have people running a lot of different apps besides Vantage who need local resources and processing. So their Celeron 500's are getting bumped up to something that will eventually run 8.0. Buying them one at a time each month spreads the pain. I just got several new servers (one for AD, one for Exchange and one for printers and other shared resources, plus a couple NAS boxes) so I can't be asking for a TS server. So I'm just trying to figure out if the cheaper AMD models will be suitable for 8.0.

Thanks,
-Todd

I have started implementing Citrix and thin clients for our 20 or so office users. The initial cost analysis for us came out to be about the same as purchasing all new PCs (due to licensing cost and a server purchase). However, I figured the next time a major upgrade is needed all I will need to do is purchase a new server at about ¼ the cost of the whole network upgrade. There are also a lot of perks that come with Citrix that are pretty attractive to a network admin.

The one thing I question is whether or not Citrix was overkill. I wonder if I could have got similar results from simply using Terminal server which you need to purchase licenses for anyway in order to use Citrix. I believe the answer to that lies in the future as I get more familiar with Citrix or as Microsoft tries to get more familiar with Citrix.

Finally, the thin clients themselves are not a good fit in some situations.

* I am gradually replacing PCs in our plant for the clerical type functions (shipping, QA, supervisors, etc...) - probably doing one for the next year. I want to be Vantage 8.0 "compliant". My understanding is that a minumum of a 2.8Ghz CPU is recommended by Epicor.

I have been quoted a very good price on some HP small form factor PCs - one package of which includes 17" LCD monitors for $100 more. I have one of the HP small form factor PCs already and have liked it a lot and for under $700 with XP-Pro they are hard to beat with home builts.

Question is....the lower cost systems are built with AMD Athalon 64 3.2 processors. BUT!!! apaprently the 3.2 is not the Ghz clock speed which is really 2.0Ghz. Is this just an AMD marketing ploy? Do they really believe these are equivalent to an Intel 3.2Ghz speed? Am I going to get excuses from Epicor if performance lags when we get to 8.0 because the clock speed is not > 2.8Ghz? Anyone have experience with these on a head to head performance basis?

I was wrong...sort of.

From the EpicWeb site under Vantage 8.0 Hardware Requirements - for Network Workstation it says:
"Intel Pentium IV processor, 2.4Ghz or higher. Minimum requirement. Intel Pentium processor III, 600Mhz.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> "

Experience tells me to stick with the recommended. Going with the minimum invites really short answers from support like, "Upgrade the hardware."

So it's 2.4Ghz not 2.8Ghz - either way the AMD's at 2.0Ghz are under - not withstanding that explicit 'Intel Pentium IV" part. Actually for the price and the way new systems are even 2.8Ghz is at the low end anymore. But the AMD vs. Intel thing seemed like apples and oranges.

Is that really correct?
2.8GHz?

That just doesn't sound right. I mean some of the most complicated 3D computer games out there only need a 1.7GHz to 2GHz.

I have run the 8.0 client on a laptop with a P2 400MHz and it has ran just fine.

I too am thinking thin clients and TS for the shop floor DC workstations -
at least for 8.0. But for right now I have people running a lot of
different apps besides Vantage who need local resources and processing. So
their Celeron 500's are getting bumped up to something that will eventually
run 8.0. Buying them one at a time each month spreads the pain. I just got
several new servers (one for AD, one for Exchange and one for printers and
other shared resources, plus a couple NAS boxes) so I can't be asking for a

Check out the following comparative benchmarks:

http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTI0LDQ=

In real world testing (business apps, content creation, gaming) the Athlon
regularly outperforms the Pentium 4. In this case, the lowly Athlon 3200+
running at 2Ghz handily beats P4 3.2Ghz. Additionally, the Athlon's run
cooler, use less power, have an onboard memory controller, Hyper Transport
for improved threading and interprocessor communications, native 64 bit
design, etc.

But if you really want to see the P4 technology get thoroughly trounced,
compare it to the Opteron:

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_8826_9014,0
0.html

In short, I wouldn't worry too much about the Athlon clock speed being an
impediment for running the 8.0 client.

Does the AMD use any sort of Hyperthreading technology like the Pentium does

Great! Thanks. Now I can consider the bundle deal with the LCD Monitor with less worry.

Does the AMD use any sort of Hyperthreading technology like the Pentium does
once you reach 2.8 or higher?

I was wrong...sort of.

>From the EpicWeb site under Vantage 8.0 Hardware Requirements - for
>Network
Workstation it says:
"Intel Pentium IV processor, 2.4Ghz or higher. Minimum requirement. Intel
Pentium processor III, 600Mhz.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns =
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> "

Experience tells me to stick with the recommended. Going with the minimum
invites really short answers from support like, "Upgrade the hardware."

So it's 2.4Ghz not 2.8Ghz - either way the AMD's at 2.0Ghz are under - not
withstanding that explicit 'Intel Pentium IV" part. Actually for the price
and the way new systems are even 2.8Ghz is at the low end anymore. But the
AMD vs. Intel thing seemed like apples and oranges.

Is that really correct?
2.8GHz?

That just doesn't sound right. I mean some of the most complicated 3D
computer games out there only need a 1.7GHz to 2GHz.

I have run the 8.0 client on a laptop with a P2 400MHz and it has ran just
fine.

I just got
several new servers (one for AD, one for Exchange and one for printers and
other shared resources, plus a couple NAS boxes) so I can't be asking for a
TS server. So I'm just trying to figure out if the cheaper AMD models will
be suitable for 8.0.

Thanks,
-Todd

I have started implementing Citrix and thin clients for our 20 or so office
users. The initial cost analysis for us came out to be about the same as
purchasing all new PCs (due to licensing cost and a server purchase).
However, I figured the next time a major upgrade is needed all I will need
to do is purchase a new server at about ¼ the cost of the whole network
upgrade. There are also a lot of perks that come with Citrix that are pretty
attractive to a network admin.

The one thing I question is whether or not Citrix was overkill. I wonder
if I could have got similar results from simply using Terminal server which
you need to purchase licenses for anyway in order to use Citrix. I believe
the answer to that lies in the future as I get more familiar with Citrix or
as Microsoft tries to get more familiar with Citrix.

Finally, the thin clients themselves are not a good fit in some situations.

* I am gradually replacing PCs in our plant for the clerical type
functions (shipping, QA, supervisors, etc...) - probably doing one for the
next year. I want to be Vantage 8.0 "compliant". My understanding is that
a minumum of a 2.8Ghz CPU is recommended by Epicor.

I have been quoted a very good price on some HP small form factor PCs
- one package of which includes 17" LCD monitors for $100 more. I have one
of the HP small form factor PCs already and have liked it a lot and for
under $700 with XP-Pro they are hard to beat with home builts.

Question is....the lower cost systems are built with AMD Athalon 64
3.2 processors. BUT!!! apaprently the 3.2 is not the Ghz clock speed which
is really 2.0Ghz. Is this just an AMD marketing ploy? Do they really
believe these are equivalent to an Intel 3.2Ghz speed? Am I going to get
excuses from Epicor if performance lags when we get to 8.0 because the clock
speed is not > 2.8Ghz? Anyone have experience with these on a head to head
performance basis?

Thanks,

At my previous employer we stayed with Intel processors, because we
found some CAD apps would not run properly on AMD processors.

At my current employer I have experienced AMD processors failing
faster than Intel processors. Most have been in service here about
five years.

My two cents ...

We are AMD on a system wide basis and have been since 1999. Varying from 25
to 30 systems. IÂ’ve never had a system fail because of the CPU.
Motherboards have gone up in smoke, or been fried by lighting but not chip
failure.
