Count Variance Report

I have a variance report that I did with BAQ and Crystal. It was used
specifically for our year end inventory. I would have to look at it to see
just how universal it would be.

Someone asked about what the top issues are in V8. This may not be
exactly what you're looking for, but here's my opinion.

We're currently running 8.00.707, but will likely install to 8.00.709
early next week. My understanding is that there is only a handful of
us that are live with V8, and I literally mean a handful - like around
five. In a lot of respects, it still feels like we're running beta
software. So it's somewhat hard to list an issue, because it may be
that it will be a non-issue in the next patch set.

In my opinion, the software stabilized quite a bit in the last couple
months, if you're not up on the current patch sets, get there ASAP.
The change log for patch 708 is 46 pages, and it's 50 pages for 709
(that's for the patch set alone, not cumulative).

So - my biggest issue - managing change. Example: ensuring that the
bugs we found on patch 704 is tracked through until we get patch 708
installed, then ensuring we test it and sign off on it. Doing so
while managing any new software is challenging.

Speed is an issue - though that seems to have come a long way as well
over the last few patch sets.

There's a lot of little issues, things like using the copy/paste
functionality to pull out the Chart of Accounts bombs unless you stand
on one foot and wiggle your nose (actually, you need to select all
rows, then right click and choose "copy selection" - because if you
just right click and choose "copy all", it bombs out). We're working
our way through these - and not all get reported because it's a little
difficult to follow through with them given limited resources (did
anyone see the posting on asking if anyone wants a job at a great
company implementing new software)?

IMO - Vantage Tech Support and their development seem to be short
staffed, but the people that are there do a great job, are responsive
to our needs (well most of them). I think V8 - once we get through
the growing pains, is going to be a great product.

Kevin Simon
Moreover Kevin -

If you rework your GL Chart in excel and then try to bring it back in.
Kersmush!! ERROR ERROR ERROR and when you click email to report the
ERROR to Epicor you get another ERROR. I have also found this with
the COA. We're bitting the bullet and typing as fast as we can!

Heads up everyone, there is a new number for Version 8 Support:
800-426-8468. I have a log book with support incidents so that I
know what is open and closed - as well as date opened. So far the
software issues are about 3 day turn-around for an answer. The
installation support was BAM answered mostly in one call. As I
apply patches, I will run through my log book to see if issues were
fixed.

If it will help, I'm game for posting my Version 8 open issues log
book every couple weeks here to the group.

Just an idea.

Calvin

I suggested sharing problems among v8 beta clients back in January to Mark
Pladson of Epicor. They refused and here we are discussing it. Many users
would see the same problems and report them to Support. The multiple
reportings just increases the workload on Support and Development so less is
fixed..

Some of us have shared amongst ourselves but it takes real effort to
maintain, retest and identify the resolved ones without duplicating other's
work.

In a previous incarnation I helped start a user group
for another ERP system.

It too started out on Yahoo! Groups but after a while
I found the email only format lacking.

I ended up developing a web site based on a forum
concept (it used phpbb as the back-end) which
addressed a lot of the issues. Users can subscribe the
forums that they want e-mail notification of posts on,
supports lists (i.e. top issues with V8), is much more
searchable etc.

To cut a long story short it all got very political
and the user base was split over which format was best
etc. and in the end i just gave up.

If anyone is interested I would be willing to set up a
test site again that the group could access to see if
they like it.

Just a thought.

Gavin

PS One of the issues was losing the history from the
existing group - it is possible however to upload the
existing emails so they can be searched.

Calvin,

What version are you on? We decided about 36 hours before going
live to redo our chart numbering. We had turnover in accounting and
decided that now was our opportunity to "standardize" our chart
instead of keeping it the way it always was.

In short, I exported the chart out to Excel, manipulated the snot
out of it, and was able to - with some minor issues - import it back
in. As I recall, I was able to get the chart (just the GL Number)
back in with very little issues (we renumbered, but did not
restructure the account, we stayed with an XX-XXX-XXXXX structure).

I then attempted the same thing with the COA. Here, I ran into a
few more issues - primarily with accounts that had a long
description. I found that when I used up the full 30 characters of
description for the chart, that I would run into an error when
creating a COA (I can get into a long explanation offline if you
want it). I used the "len" function in Excel, imported all accounts
that had a chart description of 26 or less characters, then needed
to do the "long" ones manually.

I have been unable to duplicate this when working through tech
support, so we either had a data issue that we fixed or it was
resolved between patch 704 and 707.

We are conducting our year end physical and I noticed the count variance
report is not showing the count tags and multi bin locations for a single
part number. I called Epicor and they confirmed there is a bug and they are
sending me the workaround. I was just looking for general input from the
group on this problem and in laymen's terms how you fixed it. I am currently
running Vantage 6.00.525...Thanks
