Cost-Effective Vantage Server for 20-30 users

Our Dell Poweredge 2400 dual PIII-666 with 512 Mb of RAM works great and our
database is about 3 times as big as yours. Anything you can buy now will
probably be enough.

We have a hardware-based RAID 1 array, but its not for performance, it to
have redundancy in case a drive goes down.

Don't worry about the RDRAM thing. That's only for Pentium IVs. A good
Pentium III server with support for dual processors should suit your needs.

We are planning on purchasing a vantage server when we upgrade to Version 5
and eventually, 5.1, and are wondering what the most cost-effective solution
would be for us.

Our database is 217 megabytes, and we've got 25 user licenses. The Database
grows roughly 10-15mb a month. We have a Compaq Proliant PIII-450 with 512
megs of ram, and it runs Vantage 3 and Exchange Server OK. During peak
useage there is some noticable performance degradation, but the server has
generally been reliable. We will probably purchase another Compaq, but are
also open to the possibility of Dell, and maybe IBM, if the price and specs
are right.

I am familiar with Epicor's server sizing document, and know that if we
double our processing speed, have at least 512 megs of RAM, and go with a
RAID 1 or 10 setup, we'll be doing pretty good. According to the Epicor
Server Sizing document, disk activity is the main bottleneck for the
progress database.

However, I'm wondering if a non-raid system, redundancy issues aside, would
present a performance bottleneck with our relatively small database, and if
it would be worth it to consider RDRAM over SDRAM. Would another processor
be cost effective for a 0.2-0.5 GB database?

Basically I'm trying to spec out reasonably fast server that will reliably
handle vantage 5 or 5.1, at a time when we can't afford to be spending a
considerable on computing power we don't necessarily need. The server will
be only for vantage and possibly crystal web component server.

Though we are looking to accomodate future vantage releases, I don't believe
there will be a significant increase in number of users in the near future.

Thanks in advance,

Thaddeus
To add a little note, we have a fast file server on which we will store the
vantage program files when we upgrade. This server will only be
acommodating the progress portion of the installation, and the Vantage
database file itself.
