Copying Databases

> I'll be doing that soon myself as we start testing 8.XX on a copy of our

After you restore, there's a couple more steps!!!

We go in and change the company name to "********TEST***********" or COPY or
whatever. Nothing's worse than entering a day of work into the test
database...

You'll need to update the System Agent to point to the port numbers of your
test appservers.

NOW, you're ready to go.

Mark W.
I just copied my Live database to my test database. I had to stop the
AppServers and restart them afterwards. But my MfgSys803TaskAgent will
not stop. It status is "Stopping, Please wait..." It has been like
that for 10 minutes now. Is it normal to take a while to stop and start
this? I stopped the AppServers on the test DB after the copy, and it
stopped and started just fine. How can I prod it along??

We are running 8.03.403D and Progress 10.1B

What I do is

In the Progress Explorer Tool
1. Right click on the AppServer and get the Status
2. Get the Broker PID Number
3. Go into Task Manager
4. Go into the Process Tab
5. Find that PID and highlight it
6. Right click and End Process

That will kill the process and stop the AppServer.

I've seen this hanging behaviour regularly in our pre-production
environment. The TaskAgent doesn't always exit cleanly. As Scott
Litzau shows below, I do the same thing: identify the process ID from
Progress Explorer, and kill the process (I select 'Kill Process Tree'
just to be safe and get any child processes). Then I can start it
normally.

Yes, the "online" parameter in

mfgbkup online F:\epicor\mfgsys803\db\mfgsys F:\backup\backup803.1

Indicates to backup the database while it is in multi-user mode. So to back
it up does not require shutting down the DB or the AppServers.

If you want to back it up while it is down you remove the "online"
parameter.

Thanks, I thought there would be. I'd recommend that Scott uses that
process to backup the database and use "prorest" to restore it to a new
location.

I'll be doing that soon myself as we start testing 8.XX on a copy of our
live db.

I back our Progress DB up every 4 hours to an offsite NAS. I use task
scheduler on the server to kick off a batch file that does it all for.

@echo off
cls
Set dlc=v:\Progress

DEL \\k-tsvr4\vantagebackup\0900\backup.1
<file://\\k-tsvr4\vantagebackup\0900\backup.1>

echo.

\\NAS\vantagebackup\0900\updatetrn.wri
<file://\\NAS\vantagebackup\0900\updatetrn.wri>

echo. Backup of Live Vantage DB Complete.

@echo off
