Convert from Vantage 6.1 to 8.0

I do not think you are being overly cautious. We will proceed much as
you are. For one, we just went live this year with 6.1 and the interface
is so different and more complicated, our users would hang us from the
highest pole. I like living and so will postpone an upgrade until 2007,
at least, if I can get away with it.

Thank you,

Sue

Aside from the mechanical issues of converting the data I am somewhat
perplexed by the number of people planning fairly fast upgrades. As if
this is a regular version upgrade like from 5.2 to 6.0/6.1. So I am
wondering if I am overplanning this and worrying too much. I have ball
parked our upgrade to take about a year and include a complete analysis
of which new feaures will benefit us, how to use them best in our
environment, how to train users and finally what customizations we want
to introduce at the time of live cutover. We are also anticipating the
impact on our ISO documentaiton and work instructions, our process flows
and possibly shop floor communication issues. Perhaps I am overly
fearful but right now I see this upgrade as a huge risk for negative
disruption to operations if it is not planned to a very high degree.

For the people who have received 8.0 and are not yet live (or perhaps
recently gone live):
1. How many months from receipt of 8.0 to "live" are you planning?
2. Are you "running out of the box" and customizing later or customizing
before going live?
3. How long is (was) your training for users?
4. How much "trouble" will/did the new interface present to users -
especially "office" tasks like order processing or job creation?

Thanks. Just curious if I am being overly cautious.

Dan,

I am currently in the process of doing my initial test conversion,
database conversions happening now. I pretty much followed what is
documented in the Manufacturing Systems Installation Guide which is

Dan,

The simplest thing you can do is take a copy of your live 6.1 database and
migrate it to 8.0 per Vantage's installation instructions. I would do this
atleast once a month so your data is fresh and you are comfortable with the
actual upgrade process. You also have the option of creating a training
database copy of your 8.0 installation. Epicor also has additional
instructions for this.

Be aware that SCR 26488 has been issued to correct the JobAsmbl corruption. Seven of our jobs, all with a minimum of 480 assemblies,
are corrupted during the V8.0.804a conversion. You can easily see it by listing the BOMSequence in sorted sequence -- none should be
duplicated within a job.

I agree with you Todd,it is going to be late 2006 or early 2007 before
we migrate to 8.
I have V8.804 installed on a state of the art server (I am really
concerned about performance), and there is
So much going on with the new release that it will take me months just
to begin to understand how to incorporate
This new functionality into a workable framework. I have also requested
a quote for an import utility to load
Our vantage tables rather than to convert our 6.1 db. I am taking this
opportunity to clean up some of the
"mistakes" from the past.

We are currently on 8.0. Since we are a new company we started at
Version 8 so I can't provide any conversion guidance. If you will be
using Progress OE 10 as your database, I do have a pretty well
illustrated doc for exporting your live DB into a test/training DB as
well as a couple of batch files for exporting the live db and for
importing.

I would also recommend getting DBA training from progress software,
there are several locations throughout the US but the Bedford, MA
facility is the best. I'm also currently fooling around with AI to allow
for point in time recovery which hopefully I never need.

Todd,

I am with you. I have 8.0 up and running in a test environment and there
is nothing that will convince me to rush into this. It will require very
careful planning as well as some significant training and process
re-evaluation. Once I am comfortable enough with the software and it's
stability I am thinking 6 months to get it live. My approach is almost
that of a new implementation. I am taking a real hard look at what we
can do better and more efficiently and then trying to tailor the
software accordingly.

We are currently using Vantage 6.1 and have Vantage 8.0 installed on our

will assist me into converting our database from 6.1 to 8.0 and a
process I need to take to set up Vantage 8.0 so I can get a test account
set up.
We want to set up a test account for Vantage 8.0 so we can get it ready
to go live in about 3 months. I realize any reports we created in Report
Builder will have to be recreated in Crystal.

Just one more quick point, if you are using progress, you may want to
consider a separate fresh installed version of version 10 to export your
upgraded database into. Progress OE has a funny quirk that limits V10's
capabilities to that of the previous version when it upgraded.

I am thinking something is wrong with your install or with your work
flow. We have been on 6.1 for well over a year and we do not experience
any issues like you describe. We have a guy that does nothing but enter
100's of jobs all day long, and dozens of people issuing and receiving
all day long. Of course there will be a file lock issue if someone tries
to get into the same job as someone else, and yes your option will be to
wait or cancel. If you choose to cancel you get dumped from Vantage.

If this is what you are experiencing then I would adjust your work flow
to prevent it. You can't issue material to a job that isn't released and
you can't edit a job that is released. So if you release it and move on
there shouldn't be locking issues.

If your issues are different I would contact tech support-technical and
see if they can help you find what is causing the locks.

Version 8 kind of skates around this and doesn't "lock" you up but
records are read only to all but the first person to grab the record.
Therefore you are waiting anyway.

I was hoping to have our network in good enough shape this year to begin
looking at organizing a 8.0 implementation in December. So far I have
had one meeting, and was asked to develop a business case for the
implementation. Talking with my rep, I was not able to get a concrete
case to make the jump. However, I was told there are functional
enhancements, not clear what they are, taking place in version 8.05
which will help the business case better.

My new server will be here in December. I plan on installing a test
environment in a MS Virtual Server on it immediately to start "kicking
the tires."

I don't expect we will be there before this time next year.

Just one more quick point, if you are using progress, you may want to
consider a separate fresh installed version of version 10 to export your
upgraded database into. Progress OE has a funny quirk that limits V10's
capabilities to that of the previous version when it upgraded.

We are currently using Vantage 6.1 and have Vantage 8.0 installed on
our server. I would like to know if there is documentation out there
that will assist me into converting our database from 6.1 to 8.0 and a
process I need to take to set up Vantage 8.0 so I can get a test
account set up.
We want to set up a test account for Vantage 8.0 so we can get it
ready to go live in about 3 months. I realize any reports we created
in Report Builder will have to be recreated in Crystal.

After attending Perspectives this year, I realized how much work converting
to V8 is really going to be -- especially for just one person. The look and
feel is SO different, users will all need CPR. TRAINING, TRAINING,
TRAINING...yep, there are some "cool" things, but customizing screens isn't
as important as quote and job creation. "The Todds" are right, this isn't a
leap to be taken lightly.

That brings me to the speed issues. We are really spoiled by the quick
response time and very few lock-ups and crashes...there will be a revolt the
first time someone attempts to open the part master and it takes longer than
7 seconds. Right now, it is near-instant (for all but one user--still can't
figure that one out!).

This will be a sociological change (or maybe sociopathic!) so based on what
I'm seeing here, I want to wait at least until .NET 2 is available, maybe
that will help some of the speed issues. Also, I will want another server,
which pushes me into budget year '07...'06 is already decided. Based on my
past experience and the posted minimum requirements for users, I need to get
a few more new workstations in here -- that's this year.

Dan--

I am puzzled by your 6.1 problems, it is the least problem-matic version
I've seen -- you should get with tech support "3" (tech)--maybe you have
some problems in your settings in the Progress server. They have lots of
solutions.

Lydia
Bruce,
Exactly my situation right now....waiting to prepare a justification that will convince the owners. I know deep in my heart 8.0 has incredible features that would make us more productive and that the customization capabilities alone, when put to use, would do it....but how to quanitify this? It is very difficult to put a firm number on things like grid entry or cut/paste updating or homemade trackers and dashboards. Right now we are on hold because developing the justification requires actually having the beast in house and running, which requires some investment (test server and my time mainly) which in turn requires...justification. Catch-22 time. Especially with tales of performance problems and bugs making it hard for me to stick my neck out and plead for the test server. Once we pull that trigger I expect a 3 month evaluation process then with a "go" decision maybe another "hold point" while we wait for 8.0 to mature to where we expect it to be worth the risk after a year of development and preparation. New sites coming from old or non-existant systems can easily justify the move.... for current sites doing well enough with 6.1 it is much more difficult to risk hurting the business. For me (and indeed most of us) this is a "job on the line" decision.
