Mitchell,
With Vantage v8, you'll definitely need a Gig of RAM on the client PC if you
want to run anything other that Vantage on the same PC and have acceptable
performance. I think Epicor claims Vantage v8 requires about 300MB of
dedicated RAM. Our PC's with 512MB of RAM only had about 200MB free prior
to installing/running Vantage, so we are upgrading them all to 1GB.
I also agree with Paul about the video card, we get upgraded video cards in
all our computers, it really helps with the overall responsiveness.
Additionally, if you want to go to v8, you should get the fastest processor
you can afford. We have mostly 2.4Ghz & 2.8GHz PC's and performance is
acceptable, but we wish we had faster PC's. Once you have a program like a
tracker, or entry screen up in Vantage 8 it runs great and reopens instantly
if you turn on the cache for that app. However, the first time you load
some of those apps/screens it takes a good bit of time. For example, it
takes 20 seconds to open the "Opportunity/Quote Entry" program the first
time on my Pentium M 2.1GHz laptop with 1GB of RAM and Vantage v8.00.617
(that's not the latest patch, but I don't expect the latest patch would
improve that speed much). Most screens open faster, I just picked this one
because I knew it was slow.

Memory is cheep these days. When we order a new PC the minimum for us is 1
GB of RAM. I have noticed with Vantage 6.1 the machines with 1GB vs 512mb
run much better. Also, a good video card seems to make Vantage run much
better.

I read what Epicor has posted for client PC's. Anybody have any real
world
experience with what works? I need to replace 2-3 PC's in the office and
I
am having a hard time with the idea that I need a gig of memory in a PC to
run Vantage.
