Anyone see any issues increasing the limit on a new UD field after it’s been created? Added the field, did the regen, and then realized 20 characters wasn’t going to be enough. Whoops… There’s no data in the field yet.
Shouldn’t be an issue…haven’t done it. At least you’re not shortening it
I’m going for it… what’s the worst that could happen
#YOLO (wait, do people still say that?)
Be sure to test afterward that you can enter the full length of data.
If there wasn’t any data yet, I would likely want to delete, regen, recreate, regen.
@hkeric.wci had an article somewhere about field lengths and what actually gets created in SQL. Maybe he can chime in and offer the tech details.
We’ve made text fields longer and it’s not caused any issues.
I would image that a constraint gets put on the field in SQL. I guess we will find out if that was increased in the regen. I already increased it…
Increasing it usually is fine, even if you decreased it, it would truncate - it won’t remove your data.
The Article I wrote long time ago was about decimal and precision. I even often change decimals on number fields and increase/decrease. No Issue.
