Cannot select "shipped" serial numbers to receive in Kinetic

I’m about to report this to Support, but thought I’d share it.

Scenario

  1. “We have no receipt for these parts - can we quantity-adjust them in?”
  2. Adjusted in 9 EA of this serial-tracked part
  3. “Yay! We found the receipt!”
  4. Adjusted them back out
  5. Change serial number status on the 9 to SHIPPED.
  6. Open Receipt Entry to receive them properly now
  7. And pause there…

In classic, this works fine. You can’t “retrieve” the serial numbers, but you can enter them one by one and click “Select.”

But in Kinetic, I see no option to do this.

There is some kind of search, but it doesn’t seem to do anything.

Anyone ever receive “shipped” serial numbers in Kinetic?

Again, I’m putting in a ticket now. Just thought I’d ask/share.

On a related tangent…

Management wants to abandon serial tracking here.

  • The thing we make, yes, keep tracking that
  • But purchased parts, no. Too much hassle. We’ll record the serials issued to our finished product in some UD table instead (at issue, not at receipt).

They sure are a hassle, I have to agree. I’m embarrassed to admit that I never actually thought about “What if we just stopped?”

I thought that you could only receive shipped SNs through an RMA. :man_shrugging:

Why not change them to another status? I forget what they all are.

Well, I found by trial and error long ago that SHIPPED worked for this. It’s rare enough that I never cared if there was another way.

Sounds like you are not sure what/if the better status would be?

Not to kill the chickens before they’re hatched, but I doubt it would matter. Even in Classic the “Retrieve Available” button is grayed out at the outset.

It’s been a few years since I was elbows deep in SN. If I had the list of statuses, I could tell you which one to use.

Do you pre-load your serial numbers? Not sure why you would be using the retrieve available.

It was a mistake (see OP). But since the serial exists already, you can’t use “Create New.”

If I am remembering correctly, you could use either Adjusted or Unassigned.

Not Adjusted - and apparently it tells you the answer:

But regardless, Kinetic still don’t work.

EDIT: Ha, it does not like “Unassigned”!

Support is saying (I think) that 2024.1 has restored the input box (thus fixing the issue).

So like this I guess:

Reusing a serial number is too hard

Can you delete a serial number?

Not in a sanctioned way lol.

Support asked me the same thing actually. But there is no option for that.

And I mean, we did use the serial number. So it shouldn’t disappear.

Like, it was a terrible idea to adjust it in rather than find the PO for it. But it happened, so we have to deal with that.

Hi Jason / John,

I’ve been keeping an eye on your post since we eventually will be using the kinetic screens and do find the need to mess with serial numbers entirely too frequently. :face_vomiting:

I would like to note there is a means to delete a serial number. If you assign it to a job and then it has no other transactions and you unassign it, the serial number gets deleted. We had to make a bpm to warn folks becasue they’d do this occasionally… new / different job, etc, and accidental deletion was done after planning already printed reports / memos with a planned sequential serial number.

“They sure are a hassle” is 100% true. That said, we live by them here, with all documentation assoicated to them (e.g., inspections, specs, repairs, etc.). Getting that input box is important but making it even easier to deal with errors would be even better. I’ll vote for your idea there
