I'm beginning to see your point.
How many levels deep is your BOM?
It's like you want a time phase exception report for a job not a part
class.

To answer the question to everyone about using job tracker or part tracker
or anything in Vantage:

You missed the part where I mentioned that the typical BOM for this
division
could have 1500 line items - or more - on it (the area where I mentioned
the
100 subassemblies with 3-5 parts or more - maybe I forgot to put the 'or
more' part).
Would you want to look up 1500 line items in Vantage?

At least this is what I hear from them when I mentioned this very thing to
them. This is the reason for the 'snapshot' report. Time phase does not
cut it for them, job tracker would not cut it for them, part tracker would
not cut it for them....trust me, I mentioned all of this to them as well.

Please help......

Any light anyone can shed for me on this is GREATLY appreciated!

One thing you need to keep in mind are how big our BOMs are over here.
We
can have 100 subassemblies with 3-5 different parts in each subassembly
going into a top-level finished part.

We have a division that is in desperate need of an ALL ENCOMPASSING
report.
Starting with a BOM, they would like to:

1) See if each part in the BOM is Mfg. or Purchased (I know reports
exist
for this, but read on)
2) Then click on a part, within the BOM, and see if Vantage has it
in-house
already for this BOM.
3) Then if the parts are not in-house, are they on order (if they are
to
be
purchased or customer supplied), and if so, when they are supposed to be
in
house.
4) If these parts are not on order, is there enough time to purchase
them
and get them in-house BEFORE the top-level assembly is due to be
shipped.

Once that is accomplished, can we track the changes to the BOM. Because
from the time a customer first issues a PO to us, they could literally
change the whole thing 10 times. So the changes need to be tracked.

My question is this: can this scenario be accomplished with progress
programming, or thru CorVu? Or even get into a huge spreadsheet?

I know I can write multiple excel reports for this and dump into an
access
database, etc., etc. They DO NOT want to go through 5 different
reports,
or
go through 15 different screens to get their answer.

What they want is a snapshot.

Just want to know if this can be accomplished and which tools to use.

Thanks in advance, again!

What's the real reason for the snapshot?
Make a training copy of the data base each day for use with part
tracker.

What version are you on?
Items 1,2,3,4 are standard lookups in Part Tracker.

You have revision tracking, change maintenance, memos tracking changes
should be no problem.

Seems like you trying to recreate something you all ready have, Part
Tracker.

Manasa,

This is an over simplistic answer and forgive me if I interpret your intent
wrong But why can't they use job or order tracker for this.

I do this all the time with customers on the phone. I can see what parts
are issued, I can check inventory and all purchase advisor to check the
status of all purchased and manufactured items.

This works for customer supplied material too. We treat our customers in
this case as a vendor and cut them a PO to track delivery status.

go through 15 different screens to get their answer.

What they want is a snapshot.

Just want to know if this can be accomplished and which tools to use.

Thanks in advance, again!

Manasa,

I remember about 2 - 3 years ago I wrote and posted a small recursive
Progress procedure that listed, and indented accordingly, a part's
BOM. I tried to find it on my PC but no luck. I believe I posted it
for Thad Jacobs. It took a bit of experimentation for me to get it
to work, so I haven't tried to duplicate. If you find it in the
archives, send me a copy.

Lonnie

Manasa,

I have a report on Crystal that does part of the job you are looking for.
We also have enormous BOMS. We mostly use it for expediting PO's but during
a rush job occasionally shop supervisors will ask for a copy. It lists
materials not issued to the job, the PO#, the PO Due date and the Required
date on the job. At this point it doesn't include material that isn't
ordered or material that is on hand, but not issued yet. If you have
Crystal you should be able to modify it (it's not as simple as it sounds,
I've tried and I think the best way is to have a sub report). It shouldn't
be too difficult to add the lead times (if you have them loaded into
Vantage).

To answer the question to everyone about using job tracker or part tracker
or anything in Vantage:

You missed the part where I mentioned that the typical BOM for this division
could have 1500 line items - or more - on it (the area where I mentioned the
100 subassemblies with 3-5 parts or more - maybe I forgot to put the 'or
more' part).

1) See if each part in the BOM is Mfg. or Purchased (I know reports exist
for this, but read on)
2) Then click on a part, within the BOM, and see if Vantage has it
in-house
already for this BOM.
3) Then if the parts are not in-house, are they on order (if they are to
be
purchased or customer supplied), and if so, when they are supposed to be
in
house.
4) If these parts are not on order, is there enough time to purchase them
and get them in-house BEFORE the top-level assembly is due to be shipped.

I know I can write multiple excel reports for this and dump into an access

An "all encompassing snapshot." That's a new one for the books.

Seriously, have you looked into using the Job Pick List report? You should be able to modify it to pull in all the fields you need plus add exception messages (like "too late to order, you're doomed"). You can choose which of the 100s of subassemblies in a job to print.

I'm beginning to see your point.
How many levels deep is your BOM?
It's like you want a time phase exception report for a job not a part class.

Manasa,

I am in a similar project and recognized that I needed to compress the BOM
into one column to easily bring more information into it. First, I took the
partmtl table and merged all the assemblies into one column. Then, brought
the partopr table and added the operations that had/not had material related
to it. Now, you have a BOM with all your materials in one column and then
you can bring partwhse, or whatever table to get inventory, purchasing
requirements, etc.

Access takes about 3 minutes to import tables and do all the queries to
convert to the one column BOM. Just make sure you include your next assembly
and part number (i.e. Company, FGPart, Revision, Desc, Next ASM, Next Part,
ASM, Mtl Seq, Mtl Part, MtlPartRev, QtyPer, Rel Opr, WorkCtr, etc.) to tight
everything together. It took me like a week to play around and see how for
example revisions in Access are a bit difficult to do (especially when the
revision num is null or why the revision has a space in the partrev and
partmtl and not space in the partopr).

Good luck!

Subject: [Vantage] BOM help

Any light anyone can shed for me on this is GREATLY appreciated!

One thing you need to keep in mind are how big our BOMs are over here. We
can have 100 subassemblies with 3-5 different parts in each subassembly
going into a top-level finished part.

We have a division that is in desperate need of an ALL ENCOMPASSING
report.
Starting with a BOM, they would like to:

1) See if each part in the BOM is Mfg. or Purchased (I know reports exist
for this, but read on)
2) Then click on a part, within the BOM, and see if Vantage has it
in-house
already for this BOM.

I know I can write multiple excel reports for this and dump into an access
database, etc., etc. They DO NOT want to go through 5 different reports,
or
go through 15 different screens to get their answer.

What they want is a snapshot.

Just want to know if this can be accomplished and which tools to use.

Thanks in advance, again!

How many levels deep is your BOM?
It's like you want a time phase exception report for a job not a part
