Bill of Lading

We decided to start using Bills of Lading generated by Vantage. Since we
never used Bills of Lading before, there are dozens of thousands of
available Packing Slips in our database. As the result, it takes the system
up to twenty minutes and up to 100% of CPU usage to create the list, which
makes the whole task of creating Bills of Lading absolutely impractical.

Do you have any suggestion how to deal with this situation?

We decided to take advantage of the bug in 4.0 where the generate function does not see the release shipment address. We highlighted all 10,500 + packing slips, and in about 5 minutes, Vantage created only 168 BOL's all with the ship date of 11/10/00. We now filter these BOL's from our reports.

Now when we use the generate function, the list is only 450 lines long. All items dated before 11/10/00 are invalid packing slips that have no details (we intend to delete these through customer shipment entry). The other lines are current unlinked packing slips, which our shipping manager reads like watchdog report.

Hi,
Bill of Ladings in my opinion is very hard to use as it is. Not all
shipments get a bill of lading, so there needs to be a check box to say it
needs to generate a bill of lading on the packing slip. Or at least the
ability to delete suggestions. This has caused us to not use the bill of
ladings at all.
Thanks,

I can't even find the physical database relationship between the packing
slips and the BOL's. Anyone figure this out? If so a simple maint. program
could be written to clean up the suggestion browser.

There's one in the files section.
Is anyone using Vantage bill of lading, and how are you handling the
multiple copies/signature issue. Is everyone using the Vantage Forms or did
you develop your own? Any help would be appreciated.

We use the bill of lading for truck shipments, but not for other types of
shipments, I created my own B.O.L. form. As to multiple copies and
signatures, copy machine, and pen. When our shipping mgr starts using
things correctly, maybe I'll try to simplify it for him.

Kim,
We have our own forms printed on three part carbonless paper. Sets are not
glued but each page is a different color. Some laser printers will destroy
the carbonless properties of the paper if you put the paper in a regular
tray (the path through the printer is too long and the heat kills the
carbonless properties). We use HP LaserJet 4000 series printers and run the
BOL from the manual feed paper tray and everything works just fine!

On the Bill of Lading in Vantage there is a link to the packing slip number.
Where can I find that in Report Builder? It is not in BOLHead or BOLDetail
table.

Fredy Venczel
The packing slip number appears in the reference field in the BOLHead table. There is no actual field in the BOL tables for the linked packing slip.

You can link the BOL Number to the LOG field in the Shipping Header Table
with Crystal reports. When a packing slip is added to a BOL the Log field
is populated. You can also add a Packing Slip to a BOL that already exists
by entering the BOL number in the LOG field manually in the Shipping Header.
This is in version 5.0.

We haven't been using the BOL from Vantage but our shipping department wants
to start. They've been testing it and noticed not all packing slips are
available when they click on the "generate" button. I have no clue why they
aren't showing up. Any ideas? I'm on Vantage 5.0

Thanks

Fredy Venczel
I suspect that the issue is incomplete data entry in the packing slip.
Make sure all fields are complete and correct in the packing slip.

We're on 5.0 as well, and found after much testing that 5.0 is not ready for
BOL functions. I don't remember what is was that we weren't able to do, but
when we called support, they said the function was not ready for that
version.
That's when we started testing 6.0, and soon we will be there.

Great (sounding disappointed) Thanks for the advance notice. At least I
won't be as disappointed when we make the move to upgrade. We wanted to
print them from Vantage, to avoid buying them.

Rhonda we are on 6.1 and the BOL is still not very good. It still needs a
lot of work, I am told maybe in 7.0 it will be better.

We're on 5.0 as well, and found after much testing that 5.0 is not ready for
BOL functions. I don't remember what is was that we weren't able to do, but
when we called support, they said the function was not ready for that
version.
That's when we started testing 6.0, and soon we will be there.

Thanks Shirley but that's not it. Vantage warns you that the data is
incomplete but it still lets you create the BOL.

I suspect that the issue is incomplete data entry in the packing
slip.
Make sure all fields are complete and correct in the packing slip.

Rhonda if you would like you may have my BOL form. It is not the best in the
world but you are welcome to have it. I am still working on it. It is able
to total weight from the packing list you link to it. I have a couple of VB
info on it you may strip out.

I am supposed to change Vantage default Bill of Lading to include Part numbers / Part Descriptions / and Quantity. I can't see in Data Dictionary how the BOL tables are linked to the Ship Tables. In BOL you use the packing slip #'s to populate the BOL. Does anyone know how to get what is on the Packing Slip on the BOL?

Any hints would be helpful.

Thanks

Juliet Martin
