Bar Coding

You can modify the form in Crystal to add the field(s) using the bar
code font, DataWorks Bar 39. You might look at the Receiving Label
(RcvLabel) as an example.

Hi Nancy,

We use bar coding on Job Travelers so that employees can log into job,
via Data Collection (MES).

I modified the Job Traveler by adding a custom bar code that opens the
Start Production screen, enters the job number, enters the operation
number, and then closes the screen.

It works very well for use with only a minor hiccup every so often.

We purchased the Handheld Products IT3800 bar code reader gun from Dell.
We were quoted from an Epicor recommended vendor a price of $340 per gun
but Dell sells the same one for $170!

Thanks,

Joe Rojas

I need a little information from those of you who are doing bar coding
with Vantage.
How???
If I understand this I need the Data Collection module and a bar code
reader. One that plugs into a USB port will work. Then I set the
travelers to print bar codes.

Does this sound right? Anything you have that would help me get started
would be great.
By the way what bar code readers are you using?
Thanks
Nancy

I asked previously if anyone has done any bar code tracking? Has
anyone purcahsed a bar code sub-system? It would really help to know
what is out there that might work with Vantage.

so is any one willing to give me a tour of their facility and show me how

I am sure this topic has been beaten on this board a few times, please allow
me to take one more crack at it.

I have a meeting tomorrow with some of the "powers that be" regarding
inventory counts. One of the recommendations is to start using bar coding
in the warehouse to reduce human error in shipments and to keep better track
of Finished Goods.

Is anyone willing to share their experiences using bar coding with Vantage?
I would like to have an idea of what the hardware costs are (and where to
look for the hardware), how well inventory counts are transferred to Vantage
and anything else one would need to know to start turning the wheels on
this....

We are using bar coding for Job Traveler (for shop floor data colleciton on
PCs) and it has been very easy. We now also create bar code shipping labels
to accomodate the ever increasing number of customers demanding it. So far,
as long as all we need to do is the standard Code 39 type stripes everything
has been great. We are using Welch-Allyn ImageTeam 3800 scanners ($239ea
but very very rugged) and Zebra Z4M label printer ($1,300). Both obtained
thru a local reseller/integrator who has provided outstanding service.
There are definitely cheaper products.

The Dataworks Code39 font is the Vantage standard and very easy to work with
from Report Builder or Crystal. Laser printing the Traveler works very
well. Before the Z4M we were laser printing the shipping labels (scored
sheet 4 - 4" X 5.5" labels/sheet) too but volume increased enough to
justify a dedicated label printer. Now we are creating labels for all sorts
of stuff, but not inventory yet. A side benefit of the scanner in shipping
is that the UPS labels allow scanning the tracking number straight into
Vantage for future reference. Over all it cuts way down on keying errors,
is faster and helps us accomodate customer requirements.

need some help. How easy is it to integrate barcoding with data

Thanks,

Vantage just converts bar codes to text. Therefore all you need is a
simple wand that will read the bar code and dump the information onto
the screen. We have simple wands costing ~$100 (probably cheaper now)
that share the keyboard port

Try entering "*"+"$C03"+"O"+"$D04"+"*" at the end of the bar code. Since the BC fields are created in the DBF file (with the * at the start/end) you may need to create a new formula to append the above.

I am looking for companies that assist with setting up bar coding
from start to finish. Can anyone from the group recommend a company
that specializes in setting up bar coding for everything from
inventory to job collection?

Thanks,

I've never used it but our WelchAllyn ImageTeam 3800 scan guns have functions for Intercharacter, Interfunction and Intermessage delay where you can program gun to delay what it sends to the PC. Up to just about 1/2 second max delay on each so I am not sure if this would be enough after the employee ID. But the manual says these delays are for where "some terminals drop information (characters) if data comes through too quickly."

Thanks this is great. The only issue I am having is on a few of the slower
production machines is that the scanner appears to be too fast for the
machine. I combined the select employee with the employee number and only
got the middle 3 characters of a 5 digit field to appear. Does anyone know
of a scanner you can adjust the throughput speed on? I thought of this or
possibly adding a few left or right arrow commands to let the machine keep
up.

Thanks again,

Michael

Lots of different "bar coding". We "scan" job travelers for data collection and we "print" bar codes on shipping/inventory labels (custom made to customer demands). We are also in the process of having bar coded material "tags" for RMA items waiting for inspection as well as NCR tags.

Specific questions? Fire away.

Sorry about the delay.

Data Collection job traveler scanning - Yes, installed scanners on PCs at startup of DC - although until now - 2 yrs later not mandatory to use.

Bar coded shipping labels....about a year after going live - after customers started demanding it. Added a Zebra Z4M label printer and wrote RB to print labels.

Although it was almost no extra work trying to deal with bar coding during implementation might be a distraction. But it would pay to anticipate future uses when setting things up, especially in writing procedures and anticipating user activities.

Does anyone use 2-D bar coding (I think that's what my manufacturing manager
called it) -- apparently the government wants us to use that type of bar
coding to mark product. We are on 4.0 but are going to 6.0 by the time we
would need this.

Thanks!

We use a DataMax. I think it was $1400

I think you might mean DataMatrix, it is the most widely supported 2D
symbology. Here are some of the others:

http://www.bizfonts.com/#2D

The only problem with multidimensional symbologies is that they require
image scanners to read and process the font and they run between 4 and 10
times the cost of conventional scanners. This company makes a really
innovative and cost effective reader:

Does anyone use the AIAG'S bar coding standards within Vantage? I really need help as the standard we use has the Product Identifier within the bar code and I need to find a way to either ignore the Product Identifier code or make it work within Vantage. Thank you,

Sam,
We have customers requiring similar standards. I have put some thought
into this, but I have not thought of any better way than to have the
barcode reader ignore this data. If your search finds a better way,
please share it with the group.
Thanks,

I need a little information from those of you who are doing bar coding
with Vantage.
How???
If I understand this I need the Data Collection module and a bar code
reader. One that plugs into a USB port will work. Then I set the
travelers to print bar codes.

Does this sound right? Anything you have that would help me get started
would be great.
By the way what bar code readers are you using?
Thanks
Nancy
