Bar Code Label Emergency

On the software side, BarTender will do all you have stated and much more.
You can pull information from all types of data sources including ODBC. The
software is published by Seagull Scientific. They have written custom
drivers for all the major barcode printers including Zebra, Datamax and many
more that unlock the "hidden" features of the printer. You get their driver
sets with the BarTender software. We use Bartender with several Datamax
models and they performed great for us. I bet you would see a great
improvement in speed of your current Datamax printers with BarTender. Most
Windows programs have to send a print image for each copy you print. Over
serial connections, that can be very slow indeed. If the feature is
avaiable on the printer, BarTender sends the print image once with a command
to print number of copies.

Feel free to contact me off-list: jstetter@...
<mailto:jstetter@...> . I would be happy to discuss BarTender in
more depth.

Subject: [Vantage] Bar Code Label Emergency

I have just been instructed to drop whatever I'm doing and change the entire
way we print bar code labels. Not entirely jokingly, I was told to have this
done by the end of the day!! Very seriously I was told that it cannot get
done soon enough.

Currently we use a third part software package called LabelRight that prints
4x6 labels to a locally attached Datamax printer via serial connection. Too
slow and we need to have a printer and the software loaded on each pc that
needs to print labels. In addition, some customers need 8.5 x 11 bar coded
labels. So for that we use another software package that prints to our
network HP printers. We print anywhere from 300-500 labels (4 x 6) per day.
Most of them are for one customer. Their label format is the same for all
parts but obviously the data on the label changes. Currently each part is
it's own file on the label pc and we have to call up each one individually
to print it. If the label spec changes we have to change all of the label
files. Major hassle.

I need a fast printer with a fast connection. Up to 500 labels per day.
I need to print to thermal labels.
I need software that will print to both a label printer (4x6) and HP Printer
(8.5x11)
I don't want to have to create a file for each part number we will print a
label for.
I want to create a customer template and just have a customer master
database to pull from.
I need to have the software create and print serial numbers.
I need it to do whatever I haven't had time to think about!!

For now, I want to go with a third party software package. I don't want to
use Crystal/Vantage to print labels.

Someone, please, tell me what to buy!! Zebra and Bar Tender are 2 names I
know. Will they do what I want? What do you folks use?

Any help would really be appreciated!! The sooner the better!!

Wasp Labeler, works well, also go to www.seagullscientific.com
<http://www.seagullscientific.com/> . Most of these packages should
connect by ODBC. But trust me, you have challenges ahead. We use a
combination of, printing labels from a VB form button, modified stock
Crystal reports, Wasp Labeler, and we have a customer that is insisting
that we print THEIR labels from THEIR internet website. Good luck

Hi Marty,

We use the dataworks39 font. We print labels out of Vantage.

Its important to note that the Crystal report ParTag.rpt is limited

To the content of the dbf Mtltags. I have been disappointed at

The lack of content of that file.

We print to a Zebra TLP2844 4x6” label.

Zebra was a bear to work with but after some work we got

The printer to form feed properly.

The labels that print to the Zebra can also go to HP laser jets.

The Zebra printer requires some training on how to set the

Label length, and the ribbon.

For help go to System ID,

www.systemidwarehouse.com <http://www.systemidwarehouse.com/>

1 800 397 9783

they have got it all.

Good luck,

John Mansfield

We print about that many 4X6 labels a day to our rock solid Zebra Z4M printer (Thermal labels) slaved/shared on a PC. Very fast. I treat it like a laser printer - no special prorgramming. All our labels are printed from Report Builder using filter prompts to get part/customer info. Serial numbering could be done (I think) by extracting a starting number from filter and adding record count to it. We have custom formats for about a dozen customers. Using Dataworkd Bar 39 font for barcodes.

I also have some generic formats in Word (like a label for sending stuff to daughter at U. of North Dakota). Because printer acts like a laser printer Word or Excel work fine with it.

Also printing 8.5X11 sheets of smaller labels via RB to laser printer. Could just as well be one whole page label.

Dan McKnight at what used to be Magnum Business Systems (now Supply Chain Services) in Stillwater, MN should be able to service Milwaukee area and able to help - ( dmcknigh@... 866-205-4310 x220). Excellent service and support and has helped me a lot with the label printing.
