Backup server (Vantage version 6.1)

It worked thanks Brian!
As a final step I just had to restart the APPSERVER.

Late last year, our Vantage Server lost its power supply. We had
redundant power supplies, but it was the controller that went out. We
were supposed to be down for a day and it ended up being a week. I had
tape backups, but installing Vantage on another Server and then copying
the database over didn't seem very feasible if we were only down a
day. As it turns out, it would have been better to copy it to another
server. I've said all this to ask this question: does anyone run
redundant servers to alleviate the down time in case the primary server
experiences a hardware failure? If so, how do you keep the secondary
database updated? Do you use a special backup program? How does it
work with Vantage licenses?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
We are on 5.2 and had our server fail 2 years ago. We did not have a
redundant server, but we were back up and running by the next morning
(we did work overnight though).

I am not an It person, but I know our IT person had something he called
an 'image' of the server stored elsewhere. I have no idea what this is
of how it was used.

For my part, I have batch files that run every night that copies our
database to another server. It also copies any changes reports, forms,
etc.

After he got the new server up and running within hours form Dell
support), I spent the night re-installing vantage, then just restored
the database back-up copy from the prior night, and copied over all my
'stuff' from the other server. Was not fun, but was pretty painless in
the long run.

I realize this does not answer your question about licensing, but it
seemed to work well enough and in the nearly 10 years we've been on
vantage that was the only downtime we have ever had!

Your situation is a perfect example of how "virtualization" can be a
huge benefit. If your server had been running as a "virtual guest"
within a host machine, then if the host-machine failed for any reason,
you could quickly deploy a new host-machine and be back up and running
within minutes (in theory). If your organization is big enough to make
the initial expense, you could actually have a configuration where you
have multiple host-machines, and if any physical host were to fail, the
system would *automatically* fail-over to another host-machine, quickly
enough that your users would likely never even know it happened! Such a
configuration requires some pretty big outlay of capital, though, and
some good admins to keep it going reliably.

Here's what I'm thinking of doing after our upgrade to v8 (which is
happening tomorrow). VMWare has a tool to make an "image" of a physical
machine (while its running) and convert it to a "virtual machine." We
make online backups of the database 3 times per day, which are kept
separate from the server on which Vantage lives. In the event of a
hardware failure, I could run the virtual-machine from the image, load
the database from the backup onto the VM, and in the worst case have
data 7:59 hours old. If I run the conversion tool on a regular basis,
it should be very easy to get a live system back online within an hour
(providing we have a host machine available).

IMHO - virtualization in a full production environment only really works
if you can separate the host machine from the device on which the VM
images are stored (which should be a fault-tolerant NAS or SAN). If the
host machine contains the storage (ie. the image-files are on a disk
internal to the host) you lose a lot of the fault-tolerance VMs can
provide. But for short-term solutions to emergency situations,
implementations like I'm considering might tide you over.

VMware is indeed great. But here is what I'm doing.

I bought a thousand dollar server (with everything including os license
it was more like 2 thousand). I installed Vantage on it, and have daily
scripts that back up the production server and populate the cheapie
server.

This server not only servers as a test database (refreshed daily), but
also as a test of the backup process (what better way to test then to
do a restore?) and as a oh crap main server is down lets limp along on
this one server.

Ofcourse I do backups to tape as well, and to another disk, but this
way I know I'm ready for near anything.
If your question is about Licensing of Vantage/Epicor then I hope to explain
that to you now.

Epicor allows for unlimited licenses on servers, as long as you are only
using one system for production.

So you can technically have unlimited backup or testing machines.

I just resotre the prior nights backup to the test DB. It (Test) has to be stopped first. I run it in a Command window but it could be a scheduled .bat file. It looks like this...(change drive, folder , etc... as needed)

cd epicor\mfgTEST\db
call D:\epicor\prgs91d\bin\prorest mfgtest D:\epicor\backup\backup.1
It will prompt to overwrite mfgtest and then it takes about 5 minutes for our 2.5GB live DB to restore to test. After done restart the test DB with PET.

Hi thanks, I used your instructions to overwrite TEST db with LIVE db (prorest).

Everything seemed to go right, however no report is working.

I do not get an error in the "System Monitor", they just do not come out.

I've already tried:

- Restarted all APPSERV's and DB
- Changed the ODBC port # on my client

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Have a nice weekend.

You will need to change the ports in the System Agent config (under System Management/Utilities) to be appropriate for your Test database's main appserver and task agent appserver (typically 8321 and 8323 respectively).
