Backup Questions

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but if you are using after imaging
you could switch your AI extent as often as you like and back that up. Your
nightly full backup plus your AI files can be used to restore your DB.

My users noticed Vantage slowing or locking briefly during online backups,
when I was doing them at lunch time. So that does happen. What to do about
it? I haven't found the solution yet. I had hoped more memory on the
server would help, but it didn't.
I hope this helps a little

Recently, we decided to do the Vantage Online Backup more often than
once a day. We were previously running it once in the evening, but
we've added 4 times during the day. Our users are noticing that
Vantage will lock up for minute or two while the backup is running.
Is this normal? What can be done to eliminate it?

Also, I wanted to try to send the backup file to a mapped drive
letter, and had no luck. There is a message in the NT Log saying
Cannot Find of Open File Z:\VNTGBU\Filename.1. I did create a VNTGBU
folder in the drive mapped to Z:, and it did run once when I ran the
batch file by double clicking on it. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Are you running the batch using an AT command? You need to make sure that
the schedule service has administrative rights in order to do the drive
mapping and perform the backup.

Brian,

Progress handles UNC (universal naming convention) names quite well. If you
tell the backup utility that the path is
\\servername\sharename\pathname\file.name it should have no problems.

We also do online backups at noon.

Users complain that it slows down the system.

I tell them its the price we pay for safety (would they rather have to
re-enter everything they entered that morning if the system crashes?).

Then I tell them to suck it up and deal with it.

I haven't found anything that will make it go away and five minutes of slow
performance per day isn't going to kill them.

(nice attitude, huh?)

Brian,

I had same problem with not being able to copy from batch. My server
wouldn't run batch when I wasn't logged on as administrator (when it was
sitting at the login prompt). As far as I can tell, the system didn't have
a mapped drive to work with when not logged in. The batch files work fine
once I'm logged in on the server. I haven't had time to look into it
further. So I have it do the backup at midnight, but it doesn't get copied
over to the remote storage machine until 11am - by that time, I will have
remembered to login to the server. I'm sure there's a better way, but this
gets the job done.

Gary and others,

If you are using a batch command and the scheduler, check which account your
schedule service is using to start. I had a problem way back when with 3.0
where my batch files would run fine if I manually executed them but not the
scheduler. Turns out the schedule service was using the system account,
which for whatever reason didn't have permission to access the directory or
file I was creating. I now use the domain administrator account to start
the schedule service and any other service that needs to access something
across servers.
