We are on 10.0.700.4. When we purchase parts directly to the job, the average and last cost are not updated. Is there a way to change this? If that is how it is intended, I don’t understand the thought process. If we sell the same product again we would want to quote it using the most updated cost.
As far as I know, anything that does not go through inventory doesn’t update part costs, including buy direct and assemblies.
Your way to use the updated cost would be using supplier price lists that are updated.
This has been how the system has work for many releases. The other issue is if for some reason you have to move the part to stock because it is not needed all material transaction on the part uses the standard cost.
While accurate…your answers don’t make me very happy. Are most companies purchasing everything to inventory to help this process run smoothly?
Yes, I guess the thinking is only nonstock parts are buy to job? Stock
parts need to go into inventory to have the costs updated.
I does seem strange that the system allows this option and then doesn’t
warn you about the costing hole you fall into…

I have a BPM in place to do an average cost when all non stock parts are received and sets the part average price. Their will not be a trans record for this adjustment but we currently roll up costs every weekend and the system then creates a trans record as it sets the standard cost record to match the average cost.
Mark,
Since we do a lot of engineering/prototyping work where we buy materials (in small quantities) to the job, we actually appreciate this capability.
We will be building our quotes from the Product Configurator, so it’s possible to do some BAQ work showing previous purchases for a part than if we used the built-in margin calculation in Quote Entry.

Thanks for all the feedback. We used to run on standard cost in our Vantage days so I was unaware of the problem/feature. We will review and decide how to move forward.
