Attaching documents

How can we attach a document (pdf., word, excel, etc.) within Epicor Kinetic and have it be part of the data so that no matter who or where Epicor is opened by authorized users the attachment is able to open?

Having issues where it seems to only allow for it to be a link to our server.

Yes, if you want everyone to be able to open the document, it needs to be in a central location that everyone can access. Trying to share a document that is on your computer would mean that everyone in the company can access your computer 24/7. If you do not have a file share already set up, you could look at using something like Dropbox, OneDrive, etc.

With the Link attachment type you are using now, the user has to place the file in the appropriate drive letter and folder, and then link the file in Epicor. If you want other users to be able to open the attachment, the drive letter & folder location must be identical for all users - e.g., as a common drive mapping to a local server location where users have read/write access.

With other attachment types, Epicor does the file attachment storing/retrieving to the resource, so it requires Epicor to have an account/password, URL, etc. for the resource to allow it to write/read the attachments.

You would have to:

  1. Have a resource available for storing attachments
    Available resource types are:
  • SharePoint
  • ECM (Docstar)
  • Google Drive
  • Dropbox
  • Filesystem (not for cloud version)
  1. Create an Attachment Type in Epicor to specify that attachments should utilize that resource (“Storage Type”).
    (System Management/Document Management/Attachment Type Maintenance)

  2. Use Document Type Maintenance to tell Epicor that attachments of a certain Document Type should be attached as Links or using the appropriate Storage Type.
