Anyone tried starting from 8.0.3 to go live?

Hi James,

My company is currently at the end of a 6 month implementation process
for Vantage version 8.03 using Progress. We started with this same
version and through the implementation process have installed patches
taking us to the latest release (8.03.305f). We will be going live with
this version on May 29th. As with any software, we have run into some
issues but have worked through them with the support group. We find no
show stoppers and look forward to implementing Vantage at the end of the
month.

I was wondering, if anyone started at 8.0.3 without going through all
the upgrades to get to 8.0.3. Wouldn't it make more sense that you
could start at 8.0.3? If I was a new company coming to vantage, why
would they have me install 6 then 8 then 8.0.3? There has to be some
way to install this software directly is there not?

James
Just curious....who is having you install 6 (or 6.1) at a new site gojng to 8.03 - who is "they"? Does not make sense. For that matter neither does 8.0 if you are going to run 8.03 and load new data.

We are wavering on converting our 6.1 data and given the need to change our Chart of Accounts and the ongoing discussion of BOM issues requiring extensive manual intervention anyway so we are now leaning towards a clean fresh start. So we would be doing the equivalent of a new site and likely straight to 8.03.400 or pre-9 or 9 or whatever the latest release is at the time.

James,

You can go straight to 8.0.3 ? You can also just upgrade from 6.1 to
8.03.

Pretty much a question, we currently have a 6.10 running, just
wondering if I put 8.0.3 on a new server and move the database to the
new server would that work? Since it would convert the database as I
moved it to the new server right?

You can convert a 6.1 database, but in two years of testing I found that it
does not covert very well. The most significant change that does not lend
itself well to converting 6.1 data is that the work centers in 6.1 become
resources and resource groups in 8.x. So the structure of the methods
master (with respect to the work centers and operations) is completely
redesigned. I know that if I convert data I will need to redo all of my
9000 Methods Masters. Knowing that, I too am considering the option of
using this as an opportunity for some house cleaning and starting fresh.

No. You will need at least Progress 9.1d on the new server in order to
perform the database conversion on the new server. You will have to
follow the data upgrade instructions.

So how much of my 6.1 database is going to be usable after I convert

Been there- done that - I have 19,000 BOMs of which I've used 9000 in
2006-2007. Likewise I have 22,000 part numbers of which I've used 9500 in
2006-2007; and similar ratios on Customers and Vendors. Hence the term
House Cleaning is - well let's say appropriate?

So far I've found the BOMs, the Price Breaks and any BAQs from 6.1 would be
essentially unusable. However there maybe other items I haven't found yet.
For example, I do not use scheduling so that would not be an issue for me.
But knowing of the drastic change in BOMs and routings scheduling is likely
effected in some way. Likewise on the product configurator; I don't use
that either but it too is connected to BOMS and routings.

So how much of my 6.1 database is going to be usable after I convert
from 6.1 to 8.0 to 8.03?

I can not lose BOM's at all.

Yes that is correct.

That is price breaks on selling side not purchasing...Purchasing is
fine.

So far I've found the BOMs, the Price Breaks and any BAQs from 6.1 would
be
essentially unusable. However there maybe other items I haven't found
yet.
For example, I do not use scheduling so that would not be an issue for
me.
But knowing of the drastic change in BOMs and routings scheduling is
likely
effected in some way. Likewise on the product configurator; I don't use
that either but it too is connected to BOMS and routings.

(Just to be clear, there's 8.00.### and 8.03.### and if I'm not mistaken, the
most current of each is 8.00.810 and 8.03.305)

We did our pilot on 8.00.809 and went live on 8.03.304. You most certainly can
start at 8.03. From what I hear on this list, I would not recommend the
upgrade path from 6.X.
