I am basically a lurker on this list - most seem to be so far ahead of me
that I'm still learning. Troy, your explanation of the ODBC history
explaining Merant and SQL-92 sure clarified a murky picture for me. All of
a sudden I understood. Thanks for taking the time to explain -
Everyone's thorough explanations of issues help more people than just those
that ask the questions. Thanks to all - I hope to become knowledgeable
enough to be more of a contributor one day.

Todd,
Vantage 3.0 and 4.0 did not come with any ODBC drivers. So if you wanted
to use ODBC, you had to buy them at $100 per seat. Back then it was
Datadirect/Intersolv. That company was bought out by Merant (version 3.5
was what we used in Vantage 3.0). Once Progress 9.x came out (aka Vantage
5.0), Progress developed their own ODBC drivers -- called SQL-92 by many
here. They had their limitations in 5.0, and became faster in 5.1. But
there were still problems in certain areas. We are on Vantage 5.1, but are
still using the Merant 3.5 drivers that we purchased way back for Vantage
3.0. They have worked perfectly thus far, and we have 11 licenses for that
driver. I would have migrated to the Progress SQL-92 drivers with Vantage
5.0, except that our customized POForm.rpt report (which adds some ODBC
tables/fields in it) would not work with the SQL-92 drivers. So we have
stuck with the older (and more expensive) Merant 3.5 drivers. I don't think
we ever paid any maintenance fee for the Merant drivers.
It seems that in Vantage 5.2 (Progress 9.1D) the SQL-92 drivers may be fixed
for our POForm.rpt. If so, I plan to use those drivers and finally ditch
the Merant drivers.
A little history.
