APS would be capable of using labor constraints and scheduling people with
capabilities as a stand alone system maintaining it's own items and
routings, but when integrated with Vantage I don't see how it would do this.
It has to deal with the jobs as sent from Vantage and they wouldn't have
that information on their routings. APS doesn't maintain anything like a
part master in this integration that could be elaborated.
O/S Vendors are handled just as any other work center, with their own
calendars.
You can schedule maintenance time using a simple entry box on the resource
maintenance screens. It's not automated.

I was just looking for the top 5 or 10 things it could do above and beyond
vantage.
Specifically:
Can it be setup consider: If employee A has 3 machines and employee B had 3
machines, when employee A is on vacation employee B can monitor all 6
machines or monitor his/her own with a setup scheduled?
Can an employee with multiple talents be scheduled where needed? Example a
critical machine will have employee B scheduled to run it when employee A is
absent/vacation.
Are Vendor Schedules or closed days considered?
Is preventative maintenance easily considered?

Patrick,
There are many detailed and inter-related fields to set up, and to list them
would be quite a job, and frankly beyond me. The Coles notes are that it is
driven by the use of WC efficiency and by "capabilities" (default from
Vantage operations) applied to each WC to set the assignment of operations
to the WCs. By making the capabilities part specific (setting up multiple
versions of an operation in Vantage - e.g. Stamp_Part_1, Stamp_Part_2), you
can control the distribution of a given part across suitable work centers in
a prioritized fashion. It considers all this to produce minimum delay or
minimum WIP schedules.

Richard,
APS is a separate product, run on a separate workstation. After jobs are
created in Vantage, manually or by MRP, that information is sent from
Vantage to APS via a manually started XML based export. APS knows nothing
about your customer demand, it strictly deals with the already created jobs
in Vantage. After APS imports this info it acts separately from Vantage to
optimize the scheduling of operations, and then exports the changes back to
Vantage. The messaging system it uses to do this can receive labor updates
from Vantage workstations, but I don't really know how this works yet.
We're just trying to get APS implemented and so far it is a very daunting
task. This may be the most intricate and counter-intuitive product of this
type that I've ever used. The sales guys use of the phrase "integrated with
Vantage" should be viewed with the usual skepticism. It's much better than
their first efforts with this product, but then it would have to be. I think
it may be of some use to our high volume repetitive production, but so far
it's bloody hard to be sure. Be very clear that you need this kind of detail
in your scheduling and have Vantage job scheduling running correctly first.
Expect to spend a fair whack of consulting dollars as well for setup and
training, the documentation provided is not sufficient to set up or run this
product. You might also want to insist on seeing a working system, not a
demo.

Guys,
Just wondering who are using APS with their Vantage 5.1 currently? Isn't APS
a total different application from Vantage or there are tied together in
term of application? Let's me evaluate more on this: Can you access APS
while you are in Vantage application? or you need to open the APS
application and use vantage to export the data and you import the data into
APS via ODBC or others? My major concern here is how vantage work with APS
application?
