The easiest way to do this is to create a shelled progress app which is a part table browser. Set the browse widget so that a double click will dump the pt number to the clipboard, close the app passing control back to the vbform which pulls the part number from the clipboard and populates the character field.
It doesn't prevent people from editing the character field manually, but provides a "search" function for obtaining the part number.
If you want to lock people out of being able to manually edit a character field, you need to create routines for the load and close of the vbform that stores the character field in a temp location and checks it upon exit (and changes it back if someone tampers with it.)

The problem with a character field is that it doesn't insure that the
part number is input correctly (we have some rather large part numbers).
We'll go that route if there isn't another option.

I may be oversimplifying your issue, but why not just use a character
field
and type the part number on the VB form?
As far as I know there is no such thing as a "search" VB form field.
